Kristen on cover of Entertainment Weekly + a new film?

So I just read the article and saw the photos from Kristen's cover story in an upcoming Entertainment Weekly magazine titled,
The Reign Maker: With Spencer, Kristen Stewart could be crowned queen of awards season
See: https://ew.com/movies/kristen-stewart-cover-story-spencer/

While the bulk of the story concerns Kristen's preparation for, and her performance playing Princess Diana in Spencer, one other item of note caught my eye, and quite frankly, surprised me.

Towards the end of the article the following appeared ...

On deck next is a David Cronenberg film called Crimes of the Future costarring Viggo Mortensen, and a high concept sci-fi drama opposite Minari's Steven Yeun. ("It's actually a love story between a satellite and a buoy; it's hard to explain. I hope I don't botch it, because it's a really revolutionarily written script.")

At first I just thought the "high concept sci-fi drama" was Cronenberg's film, but then I thought about Steven Yeun, and since I'm quite certain that he's not in Crimes of the Future, I am left to wonder whether this high concept sci-fi drama is a new, as yet, unannounced project. If so, that would be two sci-fi films in a row for Kristen. Of course, it should be noted that as of today, there is nothing regarding a new film on either Kristen's nor Steven Yeun's IMDb pages.

Meanwhile, in the past two weeks Kristen has been making the rounds in very interesting circles.
On September 25th, Kristen went to the opening night gala for the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is holding it's opening gala tonight, Sept. 25, with a guest list that includes Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Regina King, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Kidman, Angela Bassett, Kate Hudson, Spike Lee, Patty Jenkins, Tiffany Haddish and so many more.

So many more indeed! Unfortunately however, while there is a ton of photos at the Variety link, there is no photo of Kristen at the event. But there were plenty of people there that she's worked with in the past. These include, Kate Hudson (Cutlass director), Meg Ryan (In the Land of Women), Anna Kendrick (Twilight films), Riley Keough (The Runaways) and Laura Dern (Certain Women and Lizzie). Oops, almost forgot Nicole Kidman, as she played Kristen's mom for a few days in Panic Room, until her bad knee forced her to withdraw in favor of Jodie Foster.

Then a few days later, Kristen attended an Academy screening of Spencer at the Director's Guild of America.

... and Pablo Larrain's new and surreal take on Diana's royal woes took Venice by storm and immediately started Oscar buzz for star Kristen Stewart in Spencer. In fact, there was an Academy screening at the DGA that featured a Q&A I moderated with Stewart, followed by a reception at which Oscar voters, impressed by what they saw, got to mingle with the star well into the night.

So there you have it.
Only one more month until Spencer hits the big screen on November 5th, when the rest of us can see it.

Edit: The more I think about Kristen's statement about the film with Steven Yeun ("It's actually a love story between a satellite and a buoy"), the more I wonder whether this will be an animated film with Kristen and Steven doing the voices.

reply

Indeed, beneath the couture swirl of jewels and gowns and netted hats, she moves through this cloistered world like a walking wound: heartsick, furious, desperately lonely. Though Stewart has been identified mostly with contemporary roles, Larraín saw qualities in her, he says, that recalled another era entirely. "It's a combination of something that feels elegant and truthful and strange and enigmatic and magnetic," he says. "All these spaces [at Sandringham], most of the furniture and the rugs and the curtains and the fabrics and the colors, the lighting, it's been like that for centuries. But if you take those elements out, it's a little bit out of time. The main element for that timeless feeling was Kristen."

These thoughts by the writer take me back to Bruce Dern's quotes in The Cake Eaters
that a young Kristen is an "old soul". Mature beyond her years. This writer does a great job in bringing out deep views and ideas, I would say more so than many writers do.

This sounds different, first I've heard of it. Thanks for bringing it out.

Also, your other articles show that Kristen has been going around a lot to many venues and events. Even though things seem quiet with her at times, she always seems to be busy. She loves all that she does. Good interview in EW magazine. It's good hearing her thoughts and insights into her approach to the role.

I like your breakdown of some of her co-actors and directors who were at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. :)

reply

Glad you liked the breakdown, Ron.

Meanwhile, today Dark Horizons also mentioned the new, untitled, "sci-fi romance" with Kristen and Steven Yeun ...

The other thing of interest was the report that Crimes of the Future might be ready for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
That would be cool if it does indeed happen, but let us not forget that I think that there will be a great deal of post-production special effects that will need to take place before the film is completed.

reply

Interesting, and she has another film in the works. :) I always like that many of the films she does go into Cannes and other film festivals for the recognition and artistic elements.

reply

Both she and Pattinson definitely figured out how to make something of their career in a post twilight world.

reply

So far, Pattinson has done better, especially being cast as the first gay Batman. That's pretty historic.

reply

Yeah, agreed. Pattinson has done quite well for himself also. And apparently he wound up hating his Twilight role but it seems to have helped his career, not hurt it.

reply

So far, Pattinson has done better ...

Sorry tevorh321, but I've got to disagree with that statement.
Kristen has been in eighteen post Twilight Saga films while Pattinson has been in fifteen.
Granted, that's a difference of only three films, but more importantly, Kristen won a Best Supporting Actress Cesar Award (France's equivalent of an Oscar) for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria.
And now, she is almost assured of an Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer.
Ditto for a Screen Actors Guild nomination as well as a Golden Globe nomination.

reply

It appears the poster you responded to equates "done better" with being cast in big budget films, in this case Pattinson starring in Tenet and The Batman, as he referred to.

reply

Agreed on that. They both have moved on and done a lot with their work. So have many of the Twilight cast members - Anna Kendrick - Pitch Perfect movies, The Accountant with Ben Affleck, Kellan Lutz in a few movies and in an FBI TV show, Christian Serratos on The Walking Dead for many seasons.
