RIP 9/17/24 at 78

He wrote a lot of memorable songs for the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, but my favorite is one he sang himself. https://youtu.be/quglprlSQ8k

Hi, Clementina...yes, that's such a great song. It sounds a lot like an Eagles' song, with good reason. He and Glenn Frey were both from Detroit and they really meshed together well when it came to songwriting and performing.

I'm a huge Eagles' fan, so this makes me really sad. I believe Souther co-wrote "The Best Of My Love," which was their first #1 hit, plus he performed with them fairly often on their 70s tours. Both Frey and Souther are gone now...RIP, John David Souther. πŸ˜₯

Hi GnG! You really know your music and musicians! I love "The Best of My Love." Great song.

I hope you are doing well. What do you think about the server problems here at MC right now? Frustrating!

Thank you...and right back at you! I've thought a lot about JD Souther today and read up on him. There's not a whole lot out there about him from a personal standpoint. I didn't realize that he was also listed as a co-writer on Don Henley's hit song "The Heart Of The Matter," so I learned something new about him today!

When you hear Souther on "You're Only Lonely," "Her Town Too" (with James Taylor...one of the forgotten great songs of the early 80s), you can't help but wonder why he wasn't a bigger star. I'm just guessing here, but it seems like he really enjoyed being a songwriter and some songwriters love the "craft" of songwriting, but not the notoriety/fame. I'm wondering if Souther was like that...that he was just happy being "behind the scenes" somewhat (although he did perform with them sometimes) with his contributions to The Eagles and other artists.

Yes, I hope the problems with this site get resolved eventually. I'm doing well...just really busy with my boys and work. The real question is, "How are you doing?" I hope well and hope your mother and husband (and you, of course) are doing better.

When I saw the posts earlier this week about the site possibly going "kaput" like the IMDb message boards, it made me sad. I keep thinking I don't post all that often here (but somehow am closing in on 3,000 posts in almost 2 years! πŸ˜€), but the thought of not being able to post here anymore and other members leaving (and losing contact with them) really made me sad. You would be right near the top of the list of the posters I would miss here. So...yes, I hope the issues with the site get resolved, because I don't plan on going anywhere else to post if this site ceases to exist one day.

It's always a pleasure to correspond with you. Again, hope all is well and fingers crossed 🀞 on the site issues getting resolved soon. Have a great evening!

Hi, GnG! I agree that J.D. Souther preferred the background, and I also agree he could've been a major star in music had he wanted that. I respect him even more that he didn't seem to seek the limelight.

My cousin posted a story yesterday on Facebook about the time she and her husband (who loved and played music) met Souther at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. They asked for an autograph, but the pen didn't work! They finally found one that did.

If you're interested, I love this cover of "You're Only Lonely" sung by Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers. I think he and the other guys in the group do the original justice. https://youtu.be/msE-B5XdhvE

My mom's not doing well. She was in the hospital for a week, and then an inpatient rehab facility for two weeks to build her strength. It's almost like she's given up. We've brought in home health care and help, but she wants no part of it. Just when I think this year couldn't get any worse, it does. I'm exhausted in every way possible to be honest.

It seems like MC is running better today. I hope it stays that way. I still mourn the IMDb boards. I remember they said that movie discussion was moving to Facebook and Reddit (which by the way offer quite the fragmented experience for discussing movies and TV), so that justified their decision to destroy what in my opinion amounted to the film version of the Library of Alexandria. There were so many anecdotes and first-hand accounts there that can't be recovered. I just don't believe that they transferred everything from IMDb over to MC. There are too many boards with zero posts here.

It bothered me as well to see posters talking about MC going the same route as IMDb. I don't plan on going anywhere else either if MC gives up the ghost. I do understand others setting up an alternative. I appreciate how you are always supportive of my posts! I would miss you and my MC friends!

It's always fun talking with you, GnG!

What a great story about your cousin getting to meet JD Souther in person and (finally) getting his autograph! That's a "thrill of a lifetime" there!

Thank you also for the Jimmy Fortune cover. I had no idea who Jimmy Fortune was, up until a couple of years ago, when I started getting some of his videos in my Facebook feed. I was like, "Who is this guy and why does he have all these likes and comments on his videos?" πŸ˜€ I love The Statler Brothers music as well. That was a nice cover of the great song...what a beautiful singing voice Jimmy Fortune has! ❀️

I'm sorry to see that about your mom. A few days ago marked 7 years since my mom passed. You just never really get over it... it's so tough when you see your parents' health deteriorate and there's nothing you can really do about it. Getting old sucks. Continued prayers for her and you also. πŸ™

On a positive note...it appears the issues with the site have been fixed, so I hope to continue reading your posts here for years to come! πŸ˜€ We've talked before about the IMDb message boards and that I read them a lot, but never posted there. While some of the posts have been "lost," at least there are some posts from there that made it to this site. I'm so happy to see the site working well again!

I always enjoy corresponding with you. It's "Football Friday Night," so I'll be going to watch my middle son in the marching band. Hang in there and keep the faith! πŸ™ Have a great evening and weekend!

I can thank my mom for introducing me to the Jimmy Fortune cover of "You're Only Lonely." She saw him and the other guys on TV singing songs from their first album a few years ago. She had me buy the CD. I gave it a listen and became a fan too.

I'm very sorry about the loss of your mom and the recent anniversary. You're right about not getting over it, and it can even intensify I've discovered. I've missed my dad more than I ever have because of this hellish year. He died in 2006 at 63 years old. He had cardiomyopathy, but he didn't make it obvious to others he wasn't well. He could outpace just about everybody, and the last time I saw him he was about to put some tomato plants in quite large and heavy buckets in his garden. He died two days later in his sleep during a nap. When I got to the house the evening he died, those tomato plants were in the ground in the garden! My dad experienced life in concentrated form. He worked a job he LOVED (very jealous of that!), he saw the world with the U.S. Navy, and never stopped until his heart just gave out that day. It's always good to talk and write about him. My heart has softened towards him, and when I was in the hospital after my wreck, I imagined what he would have done. I have no doubt he would've been in the car immediately to come see me. My mom didn't even come to see me even though all she had to do was ride with my sister and brother-in-law! That smarts a little bit!

Thanks for your prayers, GnG. I need them! Work has been really rough this school year. I think the Covid lockdown chickens have finally come home to roost in America's schools. I could write forever about that, but I will save it for another time.

I hope you enjoy the game and your son's marching band tonight. Have a great weekend!

JD was a great musician and songwriter. Did some acting and came off well. And he was Linda Ronstadt's boyfriend when she was in her prime. Dude had a good life.

"You're Only Lonely" might be the greatest ever Roy Orbison song that isn't actually a Roy Orbison song.
