3. The Village?
What about Signs, bro? I would actually put Signs ahead of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. For me, it may be the most rewatchable M. Night movie. It's either Signs or The Village.
shareI saw Signs once. I thought it was just ok. I guess the whole aliens-hate-water thing was terrible. Solid acting though.
He's a polarizing director... I mean, I'm shocked anyone doesn't think The Sixth Sense is his best movie. I think it's a dang work of art, even without the twist.
I rewatched The Sixth Sense a few years ago. It was the first time I had seen it since it was originally released.
It's a good movie, but it's also not an especially interesting rewatch if you know the twist. Of his Big 4 (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village) I'd probably say it's actually the least rewatchable of the bunch.

I'm finding more of his movies, as I recently saw Signs and realized he directed it. He also played a small role too as he does in some of his movies. Just saw Lady in the Water again, hadn't seen that in a while. Really liking his movies!
His early films are great.
I do not much care for The Lady in the Water, but his Big 4--The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village are all great.
Glad to see you liked The Village. I think it's underrated. I've watched it multiple times. I love the concept of people trying to escape the modern world by recreating the life of the 19th century.
Yeah, I love The Village for the same reasons you say! Lots of feeling and suspense. I also notice a very similar music theme in many of M Night's movies which fits in so nicely.
shareI wish sometimes I could just escape modern society and go stay for a few months in a colony like they created in The Village. I don't think I'd want to do it forever but it could be great for a time.
James Newton Howard was the composer on The Village. He's worked on a lot of films, though I'm not sure if he worked on any of M. Night's other films. He may have.
I agree, that would be an interesting change of pace life style, probably similar to Quakers. Hard work but less hectic. Community works together, farming, making much of their own clothes, food, etc. Difficult for most of us as we're accustomed to all our gadgets, electronics and various stuff but good for a get away vacation.
shareYeah, we are definitely totally "wired in" today and I'm not sure that's a good thing. Certainly there have been some good things that have come from it, but man, there have also been some bad as well.
Funny you mention the Quakers, because I just ran across this video the other day, and this group seemed somewhat similar albeit less averse to modern tech:

Yeah, I think I've seen similar before, of Quakers using some technology.

Honorable mention: Signs.
Even though I find it extremely dumb that the aliens are "allergic" to water and with terrible CGI effects, but the direction and performance by Gibson are very good.
It might help your appreciation of "Signs" to view it through the lens of the "They're really not aliens" interpretation, which is explained in this thread: https://moviechat.org/tt0286106/Signs/5d658a7c339d1730b895b2af/The-Theyre-really-not-aliens-interpretation
