When Julia Roberts was in her early twenties she looked like an adult. She played adult characters in films like Pretty Woman and Flatliners.
Meanwhile, Emma Roberts is 30 and still playing teenagers.
Our culture has fetishized teenage aesthetics in favour of womanliness.
Likewise, go on YouTube and look at the supermodels of the 90s and compare them the child-like models of today.
That’s true for the most part, though there are exceptions i.e Jennifer Lawrence.
I think it’s an extension of this trend of clinging on to youth as long as possible. Adults of the past gave off a more mature, sophisticated air. Now there are adults obsessed with comic book movies and who go out of their way to use teen slang. There’s nothing wrong with indulging in some low-brow or teen/kids entertainment here and there, but that should be balanced with more thought-provoking content.
The most glaring example to me is the newest Charlie’s Angels compared with the older versions from the 70’s and early 2000’s.
Some of it has to do with how people are living longer, looking younger longer. Better science.
But back in the 80s. Yeesh...some seniors looked liked they were in there mid 20s.
And out of high school they got middle class jobs, got married. Matured much earlier
Today kids out of high school act like they are 14.
It's such a strange time we live in.
because it's cool to say "adult-ish" and act like an immature twat in your 30s.
