a question, as I don't speak British

what does "chav" mean?

(I'm sorry if that's a stupid question, I'm not a Brit and don't always pick up on the expressions)

I am an American and what you described is NOTHING like a "Prep". A "Prep" is today's version of the 1980's "Yuppie". But that is only helpful if you know what a yuppie is... Though the main difference between a yuppie and a preppie is that not all preppies have money. Money was a major prerequisite for the 1980's Yuppie.
What you described was more of a poser in addition to what someone else mentioned: "red-neck", "trash", and "ghetto", respectively.

well... There's chavs which is most popular, scals/scallys and pikey's... They are the only other two british ones i can think of at the moment.

A Yuppie is a Young Urban Proffesional - it has basically nothing to do with someone who is preppy. Someone who is preppy wears polo shirts and goes to country clubs. Yuppies live in the city and care about money, ie Gordon Gecko and Patrick Bateman.

Erm, there have been preppies for a LOT longer than there have been yuppies.

Preppies are characterized by:

1. Attending prep school (hence the name)... any boarding school or non-public school will suffice.
2. Playing lacrosse or being a yachtsman.
3. Having ancestors who came over on the Mayflower.
4. Excessive wearing of topsiders, Polo/Lacoste shirts (NOT Izod), etc.
5. Lots of alcohol.

Preppies are nothing like chavs.
