The word actor refers to a person who acts regardless of gender. This has always been the case, so the creation of the word actress was nonsensical in the first place.

They were so afraid that female actors can act as well, or better, than any male actors that they can get the Best Acting award. Thus they created Best Actor and Best Actress awards so that a male will ALWAYS get an award no matter what.
Best Actor and Best Actress awards are stupid. There are no Best Male Director and Best Female Director awards. There are no Best Male Costume Designer and Best Female Costume Designer awards. What actually prevents a woman to have better ability to act in movies than any man? Nothing! It's simply pure sexism.
I can understand male and female distinctions in physical sports. Not only for genders, some sports also have separations for weight classes or age groups when needed. That's only logical. But why would ACTING which is not constrained with gender or sex whatsoever needs to be separated?
Ugh, I find that very hard to understand. She was a very pretty young woman but now looks like a sickly, heroin-chic boy.
