An accusation that hits the press has always meant a scandal, not as big a scandal as a conviction, but still a scandal. Careers have always been threatened or ruined by scandals ever since a gutter press existed, and before that, careers were threatened or ruined by gossip and rumor.
I actually wonder if Noth has a legal leg to stand on. Actors used to have something called a "morals clause" written into their contracts, and it was an agreement that if the actor was ever the subject of a scandal, then their movie or TV studio would drop them and their career would be in the toilet. So now I wonder if there's a modern equivalent, if there's something in the contracts of actors that take long-running roles, where their is a contractual agreement to screw the actor's career in case of a scandal.
