The term African-American: Right or Wrong?

The term African-American is quite odd actually. Why do you black Americans call yourselves that? Not all blacks are from Africa. Do they call whites European-American? Well, it would also be silly because not all whites are European. What if you are mixed and you have really dark skin or really light skin which continent takes precedence before the -American? Here in Canada we just say you're Canadian and if you want to get more deeper you say black, white, mixed Canadian. If you know where you originated from then you say the country and then Canadian after. All in all you we just say Canadian.

Can someone tell me what this has to do with Newton, esp. considering that she is not American anyway?

Please take your racial obsession somewhere more suitable.

Anatja,

This very much does relate to Newton because we are curious as to who she is. Her ethnicity is very much part of this message board including the movies that she does. She doesn't have to be American, she does her work in the States. If this is racial obsession then you are part of this 'obsession' as well. Don't post on these boards.

Your OP doesn't even contain Thandie Newtons name, it starts.

Please note TN is NOT a black American, she does not call herself that, so how is this relevant to her? If you want to link it to her at least give her the courtesy of a mention in your OP but as far as I can see, it is a self indulgent rant on a racial topic which is far too common on these webboards.

because we are curious as to who she is

No, some are curious about who she is, you asked nothing about her, you just talk about the term AA, which does not pertain to Newton of which it states quite clearly in her trivia, that she is a british woman with an African mother and an English Father.

How much more about the bloody woman do you want to know? Fancy her DNA profile do you?

She doesn't have to be American, she does her work in the States.

And? Just because she works in America (sometimes) does not make her American anymore than it does any other British actor.

I am not obsessed with anything but removing all irrelevant threads about race on this whole website.

It makes you all look like a bunch of backward, uncultured bumpkins with nothing better to do with your lives than gossip about other people.

For petes sake people it is 2007, you should be ashamed!

Thandie is black. Be it half black or a teaspoon of black, she is black. Just like she is white or anything else she is mixed with. Her ethnicity is who she is and I want to know more about her. Just because you have some awkward phobia against race doesn't mean no one can ever mention anything to do with her race. It is you that should be ashamed, young child, not I. You are the one who is getting all emotional about a simple mention about race. Tisk Tisk, grow up.

Thandie considers herself to be bi-racial, i.e. defined by neither of her parents' ethnicities, rather by both of them. She finds it offensive when people disregard either half of her ethnic background.

And a very British woman she is.
