Maurizio Merli Seemed to always play characters that were mad as hell, like his most famous roles as Commissario Betti. Did he play any other type of character?

Merli was one of the most shamelessly typecast actors in history similar to Chuck Norris or John Wayne. He did one thing and he did it well, which was to play a "no-nonsense, angry, physically active police commissioner". He'd try different kinds of roles here and there like the obscure SEAGULLS FLY LOW as a grizzled veteran and his one role in an international "A-movie" PRIEST OF LOVE as an Italian army guy, and did fine in these roles but didn't exactly set the screen on fire when going outside his box. I'm still a bit baffled why his career just utterly dried up around 1982-83 as he must have carried at least a little name value afterward. I figure that he was just like Antonio Sabato in that his name didn't matter much internationally after that point, plus he'd upset a few too many producers during his years of success with his giant ego. Strangely enough he was friends with Enzo G. Castellari who never worked with him, but Enzo was the one keeping Sabato's career alive during the 1980's.
