His tenure on the The Hollywood Squares was 1966-1981. For me that was ages 7-22, so I really did grow up with the show. He was so good as the host, his repartee with the stars (particularly Paul Lynde) was wonderful. I loved the show.

I was just talking about him with my sister and brother on the phone the other night. My sister didn't realize that he was still alive at the time.

He was from Huntington, WV, which is not far at all from where I grew up. I don't think young people today realize how popular "Hollywood Squares" was back in the day. My parents watched it pretty much every night...the initial run was great and it's never been fully re-created.

A couple of trivia items about Marshall...he had a son that played Major League Baseball for the Kansas City Royals, if I remember correctly (Pete LaCock). And I seem to remember reading somewhere that he really hated Dan Rowan (of "Laugh-In" fame). I can't remember the specifics why, but think it had to do something with their "acts" before they both became famous. Marshall also sang and played piano also.

98 is a long, long run...RIP, Peter Marshall. 😥
