he was........
an asshole and anti-semitic.
shareYou have to be more specific about how he was an asshole. Tell us what he did.
And as for him anti-semitic, that was really common among people in his generation back then.
he was pro Nazi.

Well, you have to remember that he was born in 1902. So we can't be surprised that he held some opinions, which wouldn't be too politically correct today. He seems to have disliked Hitler and defended the American democracy though, so he can hardly have been a "real" Nazi.
shareIt's true, being pro-Nazi was common at the time, if you read books written in the late 1930s you'll find that most comments on naziism are neutral or positive. Nobody outside Germany realized what monsters they were.
The weirdest example of this was a Fu Manchu book written around 1938, which had the British hero saving thinly disguised versions of Hitler and Mussolini from the devilish machinations of Fu Manchu. The author seemed to think that even if Hitler wasn't quite the thing, at least he was white and therefore more acceptable than a Chinese villain. That was one of the weirdest books I ever read in my life, and it was written for boys!
That is the 1930s for you. Some stories made sense at the time, but they wouldn't age well.
shareMany, many people got Hitler wrong. Did you know that TIME mag gave Hitler the 'Man of the Year' award?
Before WWII started, Hitler was widely admired in the west for turning Germanys economic situation around.
Churchill was on of the few that saw through that. The rest of the world only understood Hitler's manical intentions only when it was too late.
many people who got hitler wrong just didn't look close enough.
shareJust because you don't believe a religion is real and supernatural doesn't mean you're "anti-semitic". That's a term that only applies to "jews" and there is no other for another religion. So, they can make fun of christianity, mormonism, or whatever and such a charge can't be leveled.
Sounds like a propaganda term.
In addition, it was very popular at the time to discuss this topic as being a world threatening event. Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote John Carter of Mars as an allegory about "international judaism" which was a story about how we should listen to some fake group telling people how to live and we shouldn't let them control things and ideas.
After WWII Burroughs felt bad about writing it and this group became the most protected group ever, although it's all about mythology.
You have to look at the times people lived in and judge them.
Google "Karl Marx anti-Semitic". Jews say he is, Marxists say he isn't. You rarely hear about it though.
shareAt the root of the problems of all these people, the lack of love has led to a lack of self acceptance.
