She was the heart and soul of this film ... and it was a great movie.
True, but consider the fact that he's much more well known. When a studio campaigns an actor or an actress for an award, especially if the person is not as well known, it seems to me that, typically, the voters don't budge much from the performance they see and the marketing from the studio. Plus, for Mckellan, there was much more public opinion surrounding that movie, the voters were not only swayed by their own opinions but probably also by the fact that millions of fans would be outraged to think that someone would dare proclaim Mckellan more of a leading man than Gollum :).
