dumb as a brick
yay or nay?
shareYay.
shareNay. Saw her on one of those Hollywood Reporter roundtable interviews and thought she was pretty smart.
shareI think she suffers from this disease known as « I won an Oscar too soon and quite easily », it tends to make them too full of themselves and kinda pretencious. At least she isn’t, yet, in the « Oscars ruined my career» club, which often follows the first club (Kevin Costner and Nicholas Cage are prime examples of that category which started with them having their Oscars too quickly).
Now, I really want to make something clear here: I don’t debate about whatever they deserved to win or not. I actually think that most of them received well deserved awards (well, the three I talked about in my post at least). I just state that this is a recurrent situation that happened over and over again.
And then, again, there is an even worse category in my opinion (and it hurts to say that because two out of the three actors I’m about to name are in fact among my favorite but I have to stay objective as much as possible): « I was nominated for Oscars so no need to really put any further effort in my career. » Johnny Depp, Sylvester Stallone and John Travolta are there. Sure they made some considerable or even great stuff and have done a few considerably good to great performances, but overall they just went where the paycheck was the most profitable. Now it’s easy to forget that they are even Oscar nominees.
Hence, Brie is somehow smart in her career choices so far (even though I don’t think she has done anything Oscar worthy since Room). So to answer the question: dumb? Might be a bit strong and innacurate. Vile and arrogant? Definitely.
I approve this response! Carry on.
shareI can see how Cage may have ruined his career by making poor financial choices in his personal life (or so I've heard) then having to make any movie offered, but I don't recall this being the case with Costner. I don't even remember him getting an Oscar, unless it was for Dances With Wolves. Good movie, but I wouldn't give it all to KC. Did he produce and direct? If he got it for that, I'd say he earned it.
shareYes, I did say that he earned it. Dances with Wolves is a total masterpiece, he deserved to win Oscars for it. But all the fucking trash he made afterward?? Come on. The Postman? Waterworld? A 5 years old could have written those stupid movies.
shareNay.
How many Oscars have you won pal?
Oops, didn't know that I have to be an Oscar winner to qualify for posting on this board. My bad. In which category did you win yours btw? Lifetime Douchebag Achievement award?
share« How many Oscars have you won pal? »
Yes, because Oscars are the only thing that defines a person and everyone knows that winning an Oscar automatically makes you a great person.
I’m not insinuating that Brie is dumb, I just say that your argument is fucking retarded because no one who doesn’t work in the film industry can win an Oscar.... and many Oscar winners are actually trash people.
I never said Larson was a 'great person', however I do think that in order to win an Oscar one has to have a certain degree of talent and intelligence.
There are plenty of dumb actors in the industry, but few have won more than a MTV Movie Award at best.
'' in order to win an Oscar one has to have a certain degree of talent and intelligence. ''
Yes, I agree. Still doesn't mean that because he doesn't have an Oscar he is not intelligent, which is what your comment supposed (and if it didn't you might want to learn how to phrase).
I think you're being a tad pedantic.
That's okay. I'm the king of pedants (pedants, I said, just in case anyone misread).
Still, I wasn't really casting aspersions on the OP's intelligence, but they started by casting doubt on Brie Larson's.
Whilst I accept that the OP is probably not in showbusiness, and that it is thus unfair to compare his Oscar tally to Larson's own, my underlying point was that if he is inclined to question such an accomplished woman's intelligence, he should probably be open up to the same scrutiny regarding his own.
That isn't true at all. Idiots win Oscars all the time. Oscars are NOT a measure of worthiness. Bad movie makers win Ocsars all the time.
shareYes, exactly. I'm a bit sleepy right now and can't think of a precise case of a total retard winning an Oscar, but it certainely happened.
shareI was too harsh before. Retard is too harsh of a word. But I stand behind the statement that Oscars mean nothing and have no bearing on how good a movie is.
shareNo! Not true! Oscars have absolutely NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO meaning on movies. NONE whatsoever!!!!
shareJoan Crawfod !! Did she ever win an Oscar? I have no idea, but she sure has a bad reputation. Worse than Joan Jett's.
shareHow many movies have you directed or wrote? Won any Oscars for those, pal? Better not comment on any movies going forward if you haven't, buddy.
shareI'm not the one calling a celebrated actor 'dumb as a brick'. I have no reason to change my ways.
shareOh, have you ever said a movie was bad? You shouldn't be doing that, according to your own idiotic logic.
And what does winning an Oscar have to do with intelligence again, btw? I mean, your own Idiotic Logic™ doesn't even make sense internally.
Nay, but she always looks like someone’s taken a dump in her handbag.
