One of the all-time greats

And that's all I got to say about that.

Loquacious, aren’t you?

Perfect > Ric Flair > Bret Hart > Shawn Michaels

Like most Europeans I was introduced to Flair in 1991. I thought he looked like a relic against Bret and Shawn.

Supposedly he had an inner ear infection that affected his balance when he wrestled Bret. Still, I don't really get the hype for Flair's in-ring work (good, not great), although his character work was spot-on.

WCW was on TV in the UK during the late 80s. Seemed like a cheap knock off at the time, but most of those wrestlers moved on to WWF later on.

Ric Flair looked like an old man, and I didn't like him at first.

Once you get his gimmick, he's funny as hell, as well as a great wrestler, and showman.

Not as good a wrestler as Perfect, Michaels or Bret Hart, but still a good worker and can tell a story.

Consistently delivered on all fronts.

Hollywood Hulk Hogan > Ric Flair > Bret Hart > Shawn Michaels

I disagree. His all time won/loss record at Wrestlemania is among the worst ever

reply

Wrestling isn't real. Records, wins and losses are decided by a man in the back room or politics.

Who wins or loses doesn't matter. It's the show they put on that matters.

reply

So if he was an all time great, then why would the man in the back room want him to lose at the biggest event of the year?

reply

Wrestlers and bookers have to make stories, which means taking losses.

Losing to build up another character's story for the good of the company as a whole.

Losing to build their story, then coming back for a rematch at a paper view and winning.

Losing because they have an injury and need a reason to leave for a few months.

You can't comprehend why people take losses in wrestling?

Example, the Zeus vs Hogan feud.

Zeus was unstoppable for a year. He beat up Hogan every time they met.

Hogan is taking losses to build up a story, to build up Zeus.

Tommy Lister Jr. (Zeus) is not a good wrestler, he is an actor and a former shot putter.

Hogan had to take the losses to build up hype, and Zeus as an unstoppable force with a match lined up at Summerslam 1989 then Hogan eventually beat Zeus (dirty) to maximum hype for the paper view.

That makes a lot of sense. Sounds like you could be an actual booker. Thanks for clarifying

reply

I'm silly. I just assume everybody knows.

Decisions come from the booker, who is the creative head and comes up with all the stories for feuds and plans it all out way ahead of time.

Then there's the owner of the company, who works alongside the booker and can change anything at any time. Even mid-match depending on their feeling about the performances and/or crowd reaction. If one wrestler is getting lots of unexpected hype from the crowd and a bigger pop on entrance, they may change the decision of the winner.

Those quick decisions are relayed to the ref who usually has an ear piece and the ref tells the wrestlers what is going to happen.

Injuries can play a big part, when somebody needs to rest up for a few months and need a reason to leave. They come in for an easy match, and pretend they got the injury there, potentially setting up a fued when they come back or ending a storyline to free up the other wrestler.

Or if they get injured in that match there may be a decision to pin them out to end the match. Or sometimes they go on to finish the match and win even though they were injured.

Wrestlers schedules (if they are contracted to be in a movie) and contracts ending/moving to a different company, retirements. Depending on how the owner wants that person to leave, there could be a loss or win.

Politics also play a big part if a wrestler does not want to lose.

Not everyone knows. I recently watched a wrestling documentary and found that the Undertaker and Kane are not really brothers. In fact Kane wrestled previously under different names
