Why does he consistently stay at the top of IMDb's Starmeter?

Since his break out role in Inception in 2010 Tom has been ranked the #1 star on IMDb's Starmeter twice, in 2012 and 2015 (the Bane and Mad Max years).

And every year, week in and week out, he consistently ranks in the top 10 or 20, rarely dropping below 20 and never below 30. Even when he doesn't have a film release or buzz about a project he stays at or near the top.

WHY?

This has always fascinated me as none of his contemporaries come even close to these stats. Fassbender, Hiddleston, Cumberbatch, Cooper, Tatum, Gosling and others usually stay in the top 500, only ranking higher when they have a hit movie. Yet the big box office draws like Cruise, Dicaprio and Depp do consistently rate in the top 50.

What is it about this so called character actor with leading man looks that has millions clicking on his page so consistently? You could argue that 2012 and 2015 everyone wanted to know who the man behind the mask was, but what about the rest of the time?

He is unique in that he hasn't been the lead in a mainstream movie that's a box office hit, isn't a household name, isn't considered A-list, hasn't won an Oscar or Golden Globe, doesn't have a string of film projects lined up like some of his pals - so why do you think he stays at the top all the time?

For those who don't know, the IMDb starmeter ranks stars based on the highest weekly webpage views from millions of unique visitors. http://www.imdb.com/search/name?gender=male,female

It's me.

I set up 400 click fraud sites that automatically send legions of bots to the IMDB TH page. All from Hillary Clinton's server.

LOL

You know why, every time someone discovers Tom Hardy in a movie and thinks wow who is this actor, he is fab - they go to IMDB to find out his filmography so they can start to see the rest of it. I am still not through it all.

When I discovered Gary Oldman IMDB did not exist but Blockbuster put out a paperback book every year with the filmography of every actor and that is how I tried to track down every film or TV show he ever appeared in. I feel I am only missed 2 films, both very early films, and the one was made for TV movie that won an award and co-starred Richard E. Grant but only aired on British TV a couple of times. I even tried to email the director and the production company to see if h had any suggestions but never got a response.

I did other internet digging and I did find that the National Library in London also had GO video footage in plays from the early part of his career. Unfortunately you had to go there in person to dig it out and maybe get a look at it. Wonder if there is any Hardy play footage sitting there now.

Hi Harvey

I admire your diligence finding and working thru Gary O's filmography in the pre-IMDB days. I benefited from this site when I did the same a decade ago.

Good news. There is only one filmed work with Gary not available (I have or have seen everything else) and that is his first filmed performance, 1982's Remembrance. I am pretty sure it was never put on VHS or DVD; I've scouted and requested it on numerous sites that put UK tv on video. But the film you referred to is on YouTube. It is one of Screen Two's three GO performances, 1986's Honest Decent and True. (Another of the 3 is the remarkable The Firm.)

Here is the Youtube link.

I believe it was Grant's first film role.

Isn't it funny how Gary O's hardcore fanbase gravitated to Tom, even perhaps before we knew Gary is/was Tom's acting idol?

Thanks Kray_Kray. This is brilliant that Honest Decent and True is on You Tube. Woo hoo.

I don't know why but I think I saw at least clips from Rembrance somewhere online or maybe photos from that film - Gary in Sailor costume and yes that is one of the two missing for me. But that was quite a while ago. Doubt I have the pictures if I did save them online.

So now I am only missing that movie Rembrance.

I think that clearly Oldman fans and Hardy fans besides just having very good taste in actors just appreciate that style of acting and Hardy has told us he was inspired by Oldman.

We're in the same boat, Harvey, and yes, I too have seen stills - GO played a sailor.

In my travels searching for Remembrance, I came across posters who went to Channel Four Films trying to get a copy or lobbying for its release on dvd. If they were ever successful, the bastards have kept their windfall to themselves. :)

It is frustrating when you realize the gold that is sitting in the Channel Four and BBC studios in terms of films and performances by now major UK stars and many other places that you just cannot get at. Seem to me someone is missing a marketing opportunity at least but then you wonder how much of that film has been destroyed or degraded. Sigh.

Heading Home was broadcast on one of our public TV channels so I got to record it on ugh VHS but it is one of my favourite performances of his.

And just like I did not get how Reese Witherspoon chose Chris Pine over Tom Hardy I never understood how could Joely Richardson chose Stephen Dillane over Gary Oldman.

Stephen Dillane is so yummy harvey, have you seen him in Firelight with Sophie Marceau? If not, make it your next must see movie. You'll change your opinion of the enigmatic Dillane.

I know he was yummy even in this made for TV movie but I liked the character Gary Oldman played vs Dillane, as well and Gary looked pretty good himself, he is a natural for post war London. Dillane played a moody poet who took Joely's character for granted, whereas Oldman played a charming go getter property speculator, with an edge of danger but also instilled a sense of self esteem in Joely Richardson's character, who was a bit meek at first, he gave her confidence.
