I would like every one of those 'comedians' and those defending them...

To look into the eyes of any adult or child that was ever raped or molested and tell them that their jokes are funny.

I bet not one single person would do that.

reply

They are trying to say that opposing pedophilia is a conspiracy practiced by Nazis.

reply

Because admitting that it isn't remotely funny and may in fact encourage paedophilia is something that can't do.

But seeing as it is a current agenda to legitimise child rape and pretend it is normal, it's hardly surprising that Hollywood is sticking by these evil creeps.

reply

Most people admit pedo jokes are in poor taste. The issue here is:

1) Gunn made those jokes a very long time ago.

2) Gunn apologized for said jokes a long time ago.

3) Gunn stopped making those jokes a long time ago.

4) Most people believe jokes should not get you fired, even if they are in poor taste. Freedom of speech and all that.

5) Jokes, by definition, are not to be taken seriously.

6) The guy who led the charge in getting Gunn fired made rape jokes on social media himself and this whole thing was because Trump supporters wanted dirt on him after he made a bunch of criticisms lobbed at Trump.

reply

1. Long time ago? Gunn's tweets date from 8 years ago, some are even more recent. Gunn is 51, he was not a kid but in his mid 40s. This deflection is also invalid as there is no statute of limitation regarding depraved tweets.

2. Apologies are fine. So do all caught offenders in the hope to mitigate the consequences. Apologies cannot undo the transgression of years of child rape comments and other depraved remarks.

3. This essentially just repeats argument 1. Also, Gunn destroyed the evidence: More that 10k tweets deleted. Such actions make him even look guiltier. Who is to say what else might have been recovered there...

4. There are several fallacies in that.

Freedom of speech as a fundamental right does not correlate with the question of terminating someone in a private contract relationship, ie making depraved comment won't hinder your employer to fire you – this is what corporate codes of conduct and policies are for, Disney has a strict one. You seem not to properly understand or think-through the legal concepts you try to argue with.

And who is "most people"? Do you have evidence for this generalization? Evidently not. Also, it's a straw man, ask "most people" if a family-company should fire an key top-employee who makes dozens of comments online of him committing child rape, or enjoying the sexual assault of minors or other depraved remarks.

5) "Jokes, by definition, are not to be taken seriously". This per definition is as clumsy as it is stupid a deflection.

First, many of the comment were NOT jokes but statements like his "I remember my first NAMBLA (The North American Man/Boy Love Association) meeting. It was the first time it was ok being who I am. Some of these guys are still my BFFs." or him thanking convicted pedos for providing pedo content.

Second, have you ever heard of "tell me what you make jokes about and I tell you who you are? Jokes are the mirror to the soul. They are historically one of the most important forms to discuss serious/traumatic issues or give serious messages.

Importantly, Gunn did not make jokes about evil pedophiles, but about him engaging and enjoying pedo acts on children.

6. This is a tu quoque fallacy. It is completely irrelevant what the guy who disclosed the tweets did himself, or what his motivations for disclosing them were. It’s completely besides the point and irrelevant a deflection.

Consider yourself debunked.

1. People change and grow. Are you the same person you were 8 years ago? I know I'm not.

2. He apologized years before the current controversy (and did so a second time). Also, he is not an "offender" as he has not raped anyone.

3. He never made 10,000 pedo joke tweets. He just deleted all tweets form the past few years en masse. Also, there is no "evidence" as he is not guilty of anything. He had already mentioned how he made those tweets multiple times in the past. And anyone who knows about his filmography would know he had a twisted sense of humor. Ever see the movie Super? Tromeo and Juliet? Slither? Lots of dark humor. He never hid from anything. Just because this is the first time you are hearing about it doesn't mean the entire situation hadn't been resolved a good 5-6 years ago in public.

4. I know people can legally be fired for making jokes. I just don't agree with it (within reason).

5. They were all jokes. He was never a member of NAMBLA. He never received pedo content.

Just because you use the argument of freedom of speech does not absolve you of the freedom of responsibility to use it sensibly. Some things are just plain wrong and making light of child rape and molestation is one of those things. It is a subject that NEVER should be joked about. It ruins lives and leads many into despair, turning to drink, drugs, prostitution, suicides, violence, low self-worth which leads to exploitation and even to paedophilia itself in some cases.

It wasn't as if it was one joke he told either. It was far too many of them for to you just pass off with a casual shrug of the shoulders.

He isn't the only one either that have made may pedo jokes, and low and behold, it turns out there seems to be a little cosy club of people also think it's funny making pedo jokes on their own and with other people collaborating (Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman and Dan Harmon).

Yes, a lot of comedians use gallows humor. You don't have to agree with it, but that doesn't mean these people are dangerous. I've joked about killing my friends and loved ones in the past. Do you think I'm a murderer or that I would ever harm the people I loved?

reply

Its not a great argument, because that is true of many jokes. His jokes were in poor taste for many people. They are also old and being brought up to just cause the man harm not because the jokes were in poor taste. Now yes he should get in trouble if you are going to attack and ask for people to lose their jobs for comments and jokes then you have to be consistent...so under that way of doing things Gunn has to pay as well. But for me, he should not have lost his job, but that has been true for many people that have lost their job over a poor or offensive comment/joke.

Many of them believe that pedophilia isn't wrong. So if they believe that it isn't wrong it won't hurt their feelings to do what you ask but it would hurt their careers.
