She's already accepted an Oscar - sort of

Oh wow...I just realized that when Meryl Streep accepted her best actress Oscar for "Sophie's Choice" in 1983, she was pregnant with Mamie. How cool is that?

If Mamie ever wins her own Oscar, she can get up on stage and say "Hmmm...it feels like I've done this before."

NOTE: "Sophie's Choice" was released in 1982, but the awards ceremony was of course held in 1983.

The Oscars are rigged anyway. These days, it's almost a fluke when someone who actually has talent wins.

Exactly, I mean look at the actresses who have won the Best Actress Oscars during the 21st Century:

1. Julia Roberts: Erin Brockovich - a real person
2. Halle Berry: Leticia Musgrove - a fictional person
3. Nicole Kidman: Virginia Woolf - a real person
4. Charlize Theron: Aileen Wuornos - a real person
5. Hilary Swank: Maggie Fitzgerald - a fictional person
6. Reese Witherspoon: June Carter - a real person
7. Helen Mirren: Queen Elizabeth II - a real person

It is quite sad to know that only 2 out of 7 of the Best Actress Oscar winners were fictatious people. However this year it looks like Julie Christie might be winning her second Oscar, and her character is fictional.

Why does it matter whether the performance is of a real or fictional person? There is merit and skill involved either way. I would venture that at times, playing a real person would be far more difficult than playing a completely fictional individual.

The numbers of winners for playing "real" people is a trend related to the growth of the biopic in general, not of any grand favoritism toward awarding players of "real" people over fictional. Look at the men as well, many winners who have played in biopics. The past few years have shown a growing wave of movies made revolving around "real" people, and as a result, more nominations come out of it.

Gosh, I couldn't have said it better than you did...

At the same time though, there is a lot of imitation that goes along with playing a real person. Playing a fictitious character shows more creativity and invention. Forrest Gump-- now that's a great acting job by Tom Hanks
