Too get the best of Gondry you need to reign him in
I just think he's a director who needs reigning in of his excesses, when he's working with someone else's script you get to see him at this very best imo. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind and Human Nature, when he's working with a fantastic scripts by Charlie Kaufmann . His best work outside of that was The Science of Sleep and that was back in 2006, he wrote it and it worked perfectly.
He just seems a very self indulgent director, his films Be Kind Rewind, Microbe and Gasoline, The We and I and Mood Indigo didn't work for me personally as they seemed to be made up on the day. For me, to get the best out of him, you need to have someone else work out his crazy ideas and get them down on the page. Let that screenwriter work it out into a linear form and you probably get some great work. Such a shame really as he's got some great ideas.
