Count Pierre?

Wow! For those who've read War & Peace, i think this is a great character to play. I can't wait to watch how he pulls it off.

One downside though is that Pierre's character is mildly obese and Paul is the opposite of that. But the guy is a terrific actor and he pulls of awkward type roles perfectly. So I can see him do great.

I've just watched the first episode of "War and Peace" (on Sunday night). I had never heard of Paul Dano before and look forward to seeing how the role evolves. At first sight, he seems to be quite terrific. He's certainly holds hos own against better known actors.

Incidentally, in the 1957 version of W and P, Pierre was played by the very slender Henry Fonda. Actually, if Paul is slender in real life, it looks as though his body has been padded.

Pieere Bezukhov is really hard to cast. Of the three previous versions of War and Peace only the 1973 BBC version, with a young Anthony Hopkins as Pierre, really got it right.
Problem with Fonda was he was way too old and too American for the role.
BUt the 73 BBC version then blew it with miscasting Natasha.

Well, they got Natasha better this time. And Dano does held its own as Pierre. He´s matching up to Stephen Rea, Jim Broadbent.

Dano's a superb actor who doesn't get much attention from Hollywood probably because he doesn't have leading man looks. He was fantastic in Love & Mercy. Can't believe he didn't get an Oscar nom. Far more deserving than Bale, Stallone or Ruffalo.

His Pierre looks very good, equal to Hopkins. Pierre is such a difficult role - hope he gets the rest of it right.

reply

Well, Paul is gorgeous in my opinion but I see what you mean.

Didn't want to criticize Dano! The fact that he hasn't been able to get the lead roles he deserves must be due to something - all I can think of is a lack of movie star looks. He certainly has the talent and was far worthier of a nomination for Love & Mercy than Christian Bale, Stallone and Mark Ruffalo were. I really like Tom Hardy but he wasn't particularly good in The Revenant either.

Interesting that it is the BBC who noticed him while Hollywood is loading films with (sometimes totally unknown) British actors. Dano could do most of their roles too.

You may be disappointed, not nearly enough of Paul IMO but he's his usual brilliant self & I'm not liking the adaption much to be honest, the actors are doing their best with what they've got!

Last night's episode was pretty good though.
