New special available on Netflix!

We haven't watched it yet but we're really looking forward to it. I haven't seen anything new he's done in years and I miss him. Oh, we did see his SNL appearance which was very funny.

I was surprised that his Netflix specials have gotten some negative reviews. Usually, he can do no wrong but some critics found his jokes dated and offensive. I think he's really funny, hope he's not losing his touch.

Were you paid to make this topic?

reply

Of course not! Why do you ask? And, I actually was a bit disappointed with the show. I would agree with earl237.

reply

Because it reeks of advertising hype. I didn't believe people being hyped about something without actually seeing it was a real thing.

reply

Really? You never look forward to seeing a show or an actor you like?

reply

Not enough to want to post about it and discuss it with others on a message board because there is literally nothing to discuss.

I'm so hyped! You?
Yeah me too!
Okay, nice cargo shorts.

Were you a IMDB Conspiracy Troll too? The rest of want to talk about Chappelle!

They are https://moviechat.org/movies/tt6648926 and https://moviechat.org/movies/tt6649108, both scoring 8 on IMDB. Chappelle and CHris Rock are paid $20M per episode!

They are the most viewed comedy specials on Netflix ever: http://ew.com/tv/2017/04/18/netflix-dave-chappelle-specials-records/

This sort of sophistication becomes impossible in an offence-taking climate. And Chappelle is intimately aware of this. The speech-policing excesses of identity politics are attacked in both his specials. He bemoans feminists in his audience who scream at him for saying ‘pussy’ and gay bloggers who label his jokes ‘an affront to the masculinity of gay men’. To this he has the perfect response: ‘I know gay men are men. In fact, f@#$ing another man in the ass is the most gangster shit I have ever heard in my life.’

reply

Man, Chappelle is a genius with the new specials that came out on Dec 31st. Bout to watch them again

reply

Wait...new specials that came out on THIS Dec 31st? As in yesterday?

reply

yessir!

reply

Thank you! Just finished with the first one.
You're right, this guy...he's not just one of a few comedians that can deliver belly laughs, but watching him tonight, it was more obvious than ever just how great of an orator he is. The man can tell a story!
Props for the one he told at the end...about the lie that made the country better? It was moving stuff that became a pretty powerful lesson...that ended up being ultra-cathartic. Man, what a story. Love this guy.

Dave Chappelle is one of the most important comedians of the past 20 years, but you would never know it from his four Netflix specials

http://www.vulture.com/2018/01/dave-chappelle-netflix-special-review-equanimity-bird-revelation.html

“Unfortunately,” says Matt Zoller Seitz, “the four specials Chappelle has released in the past year make him seem out of touch at best, stubbornly reactionary at worst, and imperiously annoyed at anyone who dares to tell him that a lot of what he says is not worth saying. Netflix apparently gambled that Chappelle was so famous, and his fan base so devoted, that he could appear to just walk onstage and ruminate, even if the sentiments seemed to be punching down for no good reason, and even if the material was self-aggrandizing, poorly paced, and inelegantly shaped.”

Chappelle is still very funny and great at stand-up, but things fall apart when discussing things he’s not so interested in

The things that made those reviews not like the comedy, is what made it good.

Funny how in that middle review, Chapelle was fresh and engaged when his jokes aligned with that writers politics.....but was out of touch and stale when it didn't line up perfectly with their intersectionality theses.

I just saw one of his Netflix specials. It was ok. I liked the bit where he gave you the line: "So I kicked her in the pussy!" and said he'd have to set up a joke to make that line work and by the time he started telling you a story and whipped in this punch line at the end, it caught you off guard and was funny.

Toward the second half he got into politics too much. I didn't find that stuff all that entertaining. Sometimes comedian can make political stuff funny and sometimes they can't. I didn't think his worked all that well.
