Magnificent Seven : Opening Movie @ TIFF

So Magnificent Seven will be the opening film at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and have its world premiere here so I am super excited as there is a chance that Matt may show up. If it wasn't obvious...I live in Toronto. He is not part of the seven and has a very small role though so he may not come but then again he heavily promoted The Nice Guys with Ryan and Russell even though he had a much smaller role. Fingers crossed. I will do whatever it takes to get tickets to that premiere if Matt is scheduled to attend :-D

Toronto is a lovely city, I visited there many years ago. I hope Matt makes an appearance and you get to see him in person and tell us all about it.

I hope you get to see him Felix! But sorry I'm hoping Matt will be busy in LA shooting TLT or a project where he has a meaty role.

I hope he visits Toronto for promoting "Anything" or "Walking Out" or better still "MOnty Clift"!

I'm pissed at TM7 for stereotyping him as a guy who gets killed in the first few minutes. For a movie that boasts a variety of cast and breaking boundaries, it sure wasn't brave enough to show an openly gay actor as a tough cowboy, was it?

Sorry I'm bitter:(

I'm so over him having to work in the shadows of actors way less talented, charismatic, & popular than him.

Felix--Do hope you get a chance to see/meet him.

Although I can understand someone feeling miffed about his small role, I have a hard time feeling put off by his choice to do it. I think I read somewhere it is his father's favorite movie. Maybe just having a small part was all he wanted? I don't know. If he is good with the parts he is offered--I will go with that. Sure, I'd love to see him in something more major. But I also appreciate how he is not mainstream. He has a large following, but not so large it would inhibit his being able to connect with his fans the way he does. He likes story-lines more than bottom-lines. His current popularity seems to suit him being able to pick and choose parts that really interest him.

I hope you didn't think I was put off by the choices he makes? I've said it here before that Matt's choice of projects is brilliant and strategic. Inspite of not getting mainstream roles he has managed to have an amazingly diverse career so far. My comment was more about Hollywood and it's casting politics.

Sorry about my choice of words.
What roles he chooses to do and what roles he may or may not have tried to get, but was not chosen are beyond my knowledge. Maybe he did try to get one of the Seven-main roles and was passed by; it seems there could be many reasons other than being "stereotyped." If that was the case, it would mean he made some sort of personal compromise by taking a smaller role knowing full well he had been overlooked because of being gay? being stereotyped? I can't imagine Matt would continue to do business with an entity that he felt had just threw him scraps (small role)because of some blatant prejudice. We all know he is a very smart guy. Maybe he was not discriminated against. Maybe he only went after a small role because of the movie's connection with his dad. To "imagine" he was slighted because it is a small role in the movie, comes with a lot of baggage and questions we really can't begin to know.

a very good point, moon - thanks for sharing it; it kind of brings perspective into the topic. you're right - we have no idea and he very well may not have been discriminated against this time.

I do agree with Art, though - his choices are brilliant but considering his talent and the critical acclaim / fame he's received over the past couple of years, it's hard not to believe there's something else at play regarding his lack of leading mainstream roles by this point. Bigots can be quite clever at hiding the root of their disfavor. I think that there are many roles actors in general strategically accept to keep their toe in certain circles, whether or not they really want that role. I would assume a gay actor would need to do so even more. Matt has implied more than once that this discrimination is still happening, but you are right that we have no way to know which roles it's affecting.

I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this board and realize everyone's hearts and intentions always come from being on Team Matt all the way. I just passed my one year mark of having 'discovered' him and know just how you all feel.

That said, this is a public forum. TM7 was specifically named as having "stereotyped" Matt. It is a slippery slope when you make such declarations without knowing the facts. And I think it Unintentionally belittles Matt--Leap: he was stereotyped. Leap: he took a roll as a consolation prize? Leap: he should have to answer to exactly "why" he took such a role, when he deserves sooo much more? Leap: maybe he was surreptitiously discriminated against, but didn't recognize it. Leap: he got to play a part close to his heart because of his dad and his love of the movie genre and the director associated with it?

Of course he has been discriminated against. He is also not one-dimensional. Yes, being gay is still something that some will have a problem with. I can't imagine how something like that must feel when it dismisses him for who he is and not on the merit of his (great) talent. I will speculate' that it is likely he has been discriminated against because he is SO handsome. I remember reading even Larry Kramer questioned his playing the part of Felix because he is so gorgeous.

I have faith that Matt will continue to be brilliant and make professional decisions he chooses to make based on what inspires him as an artist or makes his dad happy or maybe a role his sons can watch...for whatever reason, I would never contemplate he compromised himself.
