Emmy winner Jeff Tambor on trans films

Jeff Tambor of Transparent keeps getting nominated and winning Emmys for portraying a transgender female. He made a point of saying he hopes he's the last male doing this.
He knows 'Anything'is in the can but has joined Jen and Jill on the "only a trans can play a trans character. When did acting and getting an award for acting become so pc? If a film can't be sold to the investors based on the star quality hired, what is really going to become of Hollywood?
Will Matt only be allowed to play gay roles?
No one seems to have the fortitude to call a spade a spade
Look at the show "I am Cait". Gone after 2 years from lack of interest, bad producing or both.
I will see anything Matt is in because he's a good actor. He just also happens to be a decent human being. And his fans don't care that he's gay.
So why all the vitriol and why is no one in Hollywood standing behind.Mark Ruffalo's roght to produce and Matt's right to act in something controversial.
I didn't see the gay community up in arms with the casting in Brokeback Mountain.
Is this just women and trans women being petty and greedy?
I don?t want this controversy hurting Matt's career.

This was expected from Jeffrey Tambhor & Jill Solloway. Ironic, how they were never this passionate about the trans casting issue until the recent controversy. Their speeches were nothing but a vain attempt at hiding their hypocrisy. I'm not sure if the trans community is eating up this condescending lip service. Inspite of the damage control, in the end their words won't mean much so long as they are going to continue casting a straight white man as a trans woman.

It's shameless & hypocritical.

It will be sad if the trans community continues to throw shade are Matt & "Anything" while giving a free pass to Transparent & Jeffrey Tambhor.

I think this blatant double standard is only going to help Matt & make people sympathize with him. He already seems to gaining respect for the way he's handled the controversy.

I agree with you about the rest of Hollywood not speaking up. I hope they will soon.

I heard about it but didn't see it. So he threw Matt and Mark under the bus? I'm disgusted - I expected better of him, though I'm not sure what that misplaced faith was based on.

I think in the long run Tambor, Holloway and Richards will hurt their cause. It was interesting that audience applause for both Holloway and Tambor seemed somewhat tepid, while Kimmel's rather brilliant line that "Transparent was born a drama but identifies as a comedy" got much more applause. Not only did it wickedly call out the double standard they apply to gender, but also to the fact they keep submitting Transparent as a comedy.

If Tambor was credible he would quit Transparent and have a trans woman take his role. It would not be the first time an actor has been replaced in a series. What really is galling about this group, is that they are the direct beneficiaries of the decades of blood, sweat and tears of activism by the LGB community. Holloway and Richards would have no platform to voice their issues if not for the groundwork of gay men and women. Matt will weather this storm.

I didn't watch the Emmys. It's good to know about the audience response. I guess the desperation & the hypocrisy were palpable.

You're right about the Transparent team fishing for awards even at the expense of calling themselves a "comedy" when it's a heartfelt dramatic story of a transgender woman, shows how desperate they are.

Tambhor was infuriatingly self absorbed when he said he wants to be the last man playing transgender. I mean, I know what he meant but to put it in those terms is so incredibly selfish. I hope more people call him out on it.

I agree with you that he needs to step down & give the part to a trans woman, if he really meant those words. I bet they wont' for "practical" reasons. Well then those "reasons" apply to Anything movie as well. The movie is already in the can.

Where is Ryan Murphy on this? Now that the Emmy Awards is over, and he has a slew of statuettes, he should safely be able to comment or is AHS6 more important than standing behind a hard working actor?
Whoopi Goldberg behind Mark and Matt.
Hollywood seems like a landmine in which to operate successfully.

Thank god Brangelina is on the front pages and is the new story but sad for the kids.

Tambor breathed new life into a dying story, not a word from the director of "Anything". Has he nothing to say? Or journalists to lazy to contact him? I would have thought an alternative argument defending Matt might have been presented by somebody but no all follow the Jen Richards line.

Possibly just as well that "The Last Tycoon" was ordered to series before this contrived controversy, would hate to think this silliness might have derailed a fine show & a great opportunity for Matt.

In the normal schedule of film post-production "Anything" probably wouldn't be released til about a year after filming finished. I wonder what might happen now? Wouldn't be surprised if the film doesn't disappear into limbo & get a tiny release in 2-3 years, with no expectations of previously anticipated awards. Doubt there is any money to be made in a opportunistic early release to capitalise on the publicity, surely this was a economically marginally film just done for prestige/art by the actors/director involved.

Are you saying that the Academy would have to act in a 'politically correct' way and purposely not give an award to either Mark or Matt if there work merits it because that blowhard Tambor made a narcissistic comment on his own fine acting skills?
Transparent and The Last Tycoon are Amazon projects. Hoping nothing Matt is working on gets derailed.
He has time to work on Orpheus Descending and Monty during this hiatus.
