I think his accent is cool

What's with all the spoilt upper movie goers these days. They've been so brainwashed by todays media that they believe his accent to be repulsive.

I think it's cool and it give his character a personality and charm unlike some actor out of New York, California or Britain.

He doesn't want to change his accent and that's his choice, and that's pretty ballsy. He knows it'll limit his career but he's proud of it, and that's a better person than someone who wants to pretentiously live and die the theater and get buried next to Malon Brando, whilst Billy Crystal is singing at his funeral.

He has a cool job and will just take what he can get out of it without losing self respect.

I'm also glad that he won't change his accent just to get a part.

Me, too. If you really like it, you should visit Alabama and Georgia. Most of the guys talk like that. The quickest way to tell a fake southern accent is they aren't talking from their guts like Lucas does. Maybe it's just the back of their throat. I don't know why the fancy speech/dialect teachers cannot teach that but listen to Pride when he even tries to sound southern ehich is hit and miss.

I agree with you and the other users. I so appreciate his accent, and it's always such a joy to see him act. Good to see others like it, too :)

I cannot stand to listen to him, he sounds worse than Forrest Gump. Learn to speak and pronounce English correctly please.

I would rather listen to the dialects spoken by rappers and urban youth than this guy. It's sad when Japanese speak English better than he does. I've traveled to more than 30 countries (compared to 98% of naturally born Americans who have never set a toe onto foreign soil), lived abroad for several years, and have learned to speak a second language (compared to 97% of naturally born Americans without heritage from overseas).

Whenever people in other countries want to emphasize ignorant and uncouth Americans, this is the "dialect" they imitate, the southern hick.

I get what you're saying but when you grow up in the Deep South you can't just get rid of your dialect easily & sound like a neutral Midwesterner. And why should you have to anyway? There's nothing wrong with sounding different. I spent most of my youth growing up in Oklahoma & even though I moved back to Michigan at age 15, ppl here can still hear my accent. But they don't think I'm dumb or like me any less for it. As a matter of fact, they actually think it's kinda neat. And just because an American speaks with a heavy southern accent doesn't mean they're automatically dumb or don't have a command of the English language. That's just a stereotype that's been perpetuated by tv & the movies over the years. So it's no wonder that foreigners think that way. There are probably just as many unsophisticated ppl living in the rest of the country as well.

Do a little research with NGOs and even the US State Department before revealing your ignorance. I am a Political Scientist-International Relations-Experise Middle East. What countries (if any) have you visited, aside from the possibility of the US military's expansionist wars?

I've visited a single country more frequently than all of the total countries you've been to combined. Therefore, I, unlike you, are qualified to speak on global issues and US perception abroad.

Also, you can visit the UN's website to compare international travel by nations. Americans are the least traveled nationality in the Western Developed World. Albeit, it may require a tad bit of statistical and methodological work. But, if you possess even a basic education (I graduated Magna Cum Laud-High Honors 3.89gpa with my B.A. and earned two M.A.'s: Political Science and Middle East Studies) it should not present any problems.

Ohhh, well aren't you just an amazing person now? Seriously dude, you really need to check your attitude at the door. And while you're at it, chill the f#@$ out. My opinion is just as valid as yours & one does not need to visit lots of countries or have a Masters degree to know something about accents and know what some foreigners think about Americans. FYI: I've met several foreign ppl from all over the world & am very aware of their perceptions of us. And like most things, some of them think negatively & some think positively about us. But they don't all think we are a bunch of buffoons.
