Whatever happened to the 80s rock singer Pat Benatar?

Why isn’t she as popular as she was in the early 1980s?

Multiple reasons, including:

She seems to have “peaked” in 1985 - The song Invincible was on the sound track of a commercial film flop known as The Legend of Billie Jean and it was Benatar’s last major single on the US charts. She had several hits in Canada and Australia on her next album; however since 1985 Benatar has not charted significantly in the US where she experienced her greatest success.

She seems to have eschewed duets - Although Benatar’s voice would have lent itself to a successful series of duets (Peter Cetera, Kenny Loggins or Peabo Bryson, anyone?) for some reason she decided not to go that route. It certainly would have helped her flagging career.

She seems to have eschewed movie soundtracks - Benatar could have “Kenny Logginsed” her way into the 1990s by aiming at the film industry. Had she created one or more singles for film soundtracks she would have remained relevant far longer than she did,

She didn’t go for a film career - Cyndi Lauper extended her career with her brief forays into acting. While she wasn’t very successful at the box office, she was memorable. Benatar could have done the same or similar, but seems to have decided against it.

She made some terrible business decisions - Her follow up albums to her 1985 release where decent, but not what the listening public wanted from her. She apparently had difficulties with her record labels and those problems drained her stamina. She also decided to start a family and that made it difficult for her to be marketed as a sex symbol to a music buying public which was seeking one.
