Very good actor. His big screen stuff was pretty much limited to horror (largely Hammer; Taste the Blood of Dracula, The Horror of Frankenstein, Lust for a Vampire, Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, Fear in the Night), but he was a regular on UK TV. For years he did mainly drama, but he finally got a chance to show his comedy chops in his wonderful sitcom Dear John as a divorcee trying to start over. An all-round nice guy too, apparently. Taken far to young in 1991 at the age of just 51 (cancer). RIP

He was great in Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde. That's actually one of my favorite Hammer movies. The casting of Bates and Martine Beswick was perfect.

Completely agree about the perfect casting of Bates and Beswick 👍

He was definitely taken far too soon,I have always been baffled that dear John didn't get a third series.

Absolutely. I'd have loved another series of Dear John. Kirk used to have me in stitches! (Peter Blake also now sadly gone)
