It happened in part due to his established track record as a writer/producer getting him the job helming Mision Impossible 3, which pleased Paramount enough that he was courted to direct 2009's Star Trek. After that subsequent success (and glazing over a few other notable productions), Disney executives felt comfortable enough to enlist his services for re-launching Star Wars.
And if we're discussing all his batting attempts, it serves to mention the complete waffle that is Super 8.
