What a Hack

I mean he's not totally useless.

Mission: Impossible 3 is probably my favourite in the series, and I do like Cioverfield, which he produced, but everything else he's been involved in has been an inferior remake/copy of what's come before (i.e. Star Trek and Star Wars) or a superficially interesting idea that goes nowhere (i.e. 'Lost' and, sorry to say, Super 8).

The fact that he's one of the most important names in Hollywood right now goes to show how derivative and creatively bankrupt this era is.

reply

Agreed. I don't like his mystery boxes or lens flares, and something aggravates me about his actual appearance as well.

reply

Hollywood doesn't care about creativity, it only cares about profits. Shit or not, as long as something makes money, it will be produced.

reply

It's a business first. If people are watching and they are making money that's all they should be concerned about ..

reply

He's a business man. If you're an investor and you want to make your money back, you hire JJ. It is what it is.

The brainwashed fans who let Hollywood convince them he's the Movie Messiah is the real problem.

reply

Yeah. If this is what people wanna watch that is what they will produce. Box office doesn't lie. People still want this stuff. Pretty much the majority of movies out there right now are scifi/fant. Look at all the Superhero stuff. It was ok for awhile but it's getting so oversaturated and boring now. We have had what????30-40 superhero films in the last ten years AT LEAST.....add the scifi films etc and that's like 80% what's released. Than add all the Superhero and scifi tv shows that are so scattered about now on different platforms. It's getting worse than ever. I thought the 90's were bad..lol.....than we get the occasional action film like Rambo or Drama like Downton Abbey at the theaters and they disappear after 3 weeks.....lol....but to be truthful there is way more product coming out of Hollywood and all the foreign studios than ever before. Look at All the forgetful foreign crap on Netflix right now...lol....

reply

Well foreign countries have been cranking out movies forever. We had a great system in place where only the good ones got ported across the ocean. Now with streaming it's a total shit show.

reply

Yup....

reply

What's worse is that his system of Sci-Fi production and storytelling have spilled into the ethos of other movie studios who enforce his brand of producing which is make a movie that is highly derivative of previous, more popular movies and incorporate it into your own story.

This happened before with the overrated Wachowski brothers and everyone that followed used their style of martial arts meets Star Wars approach to character conflict resolution

reply

I like some of his movies. I didn't care to see Star wars or any Star Trek sequels (the first one wasn't my flavor). But, I like Joyride, Cloverfield, and the characters in Super 8. So, I won't complain about his ability.

reply

He's the Gary Bettman of the film industry. Nobody can deny that he's made studios a lot of money, but every film he's made sucks and his creative vision has played a huge part in destroying Hollywood cinema. Bettman is the commissioner of the NHL. NHL hockey is the worst it has ever been, but he's simultaneously managed to grow the league's popularity in America and has made the league, owners, and players a lot more money than they were getting before. Successful in one very narrow sense, but he's caused irreparable damage to the game that get overlooked just because the finances are good.

reply

I disagree he is still the next spielberg
