So much for being OLD SCHOOL LIBERAL. So he has changed or rather swaps in and out of being a Liberal. Libertarian is to the right of center. He's what you call a Liberal Conservative. A fiscally Conservative, socially Liberal type.
Identifying as socially liberal and fiscally conservative tells the world “I care about people but not enough to see them cared for on a systemic level.” The key thing that these types fail to see is that, in this capitalist global economy, money is the materialization of care. Empathy can only go so far when there are lives at stake, and empathy needs the funding to turn into comprehensive action.
I think people were right to call him Conservative even though he tries to say he isn't.
Modern liberals have turned into a woke hive mind. They are out to destroy and cancel anyone who doesn't think the exact same way as they do. Who, being of sane mind, would want to be a part of that mess?
> Modern liberals have turned into a woke hive mind.
Fuck off with this kind of juvenile brain-washing nonsense. How you have the nerve to say hive mind applied to anything but the drone and worker programmable Republicans can actually be ordered about by Donald Trump is insurgent rhetoric propaganda.
It's more that the definition of liberal has changed. If you go back 20 or so years, a liberal was a person who believed in freedom of speech and civil liberties, and while more in favor of governmental intervention in people's financial lives were in agreement with the conservatives that communism and socialism were dangerous. Fast-forward to today, and the left has gone crazy. Censorship is openly defended, crime has been decriminalized, and they openly espouse socialism as a goal. Anyone who was liberal in 1993 is going to have far more in common with Libertarians in 2023 than with modern-day liberals.
That might be the most ill-informed take I’ve ever read about the state of American politics. In fact, I’m 99% sure most of these high volume posters are simply bots to do some wacky spin jobs, propagate anger and tension, and thereby increase engagement.
Maher is a liberal, progressive who supports the ACLU (small ‘L’ libertarians) and is simply not obsessed with identity politics and virtue signaling. Democrats are fiscally conservative… the way they govern, to be metaphorical, can basically be likened to preventative care. If you’re responsible, get regular checkups, dental cleanings, oil changes for your car, etc, then sure, you’re doing a lot of SPENDING. But everything’s gonna be relatively stable, so you do some taxation along with it and you may balance the budget sometimes. Republicans are instead the equivalent of wrecking ball behavior, chain-smoking, pussy-grabbing, being lazy, gluttonous and obese. Then they end up in the ER being told they need a $100,000 procedure to prevent chronic pain or fatal illness. Or, asking a relative to put up their house for bail money. That’s Weapons of Mass Destruction. Regime change in Iraq. Withdrawal of Paris Climate Accords. “Mexico is gonna pay for it.” The January 6th insurrection.
Does anyone really believe that we’re 30 trillion in debt because of food stamps, Medicaid, and homeless shelters serving soup?
Deregulation and corporate welfare is the root of the Republican Party (and Libertarian) folly, and it always costs more money in the end when the shit hits the fan.
Also, censorship is not a government policy. Citizens are allowed to be woke or advocate wokeness. This is not some socialist agenda that is part of the Democratic Party platform. Basically, by “cancel culture” you’re talking about personal private or commercial boycotts, essentially. These are individual citizens or private institutions doing what they please such as banning Trump from their social media platform or not inviting Milo Yiannopolis and Ann Coulter to give an undergraduate orientation. Who cares? You can find their trash manifestos in the public libraries if you desire. To argue against this, whether with Executive, Legislative or Judical policy would be fascist or otherwise some form of criminal authoritarianism that encapsulates the current state of GOP talking points.
There's nowhere even to begin responding to this. You have such a warped and inaccurate sense of how things work that it would be impossible to even find common ground on which to start discussing anything. I'm sure you'll dismiss everything I'm writing and smugly tell yourself how right you are and how wrong I am, but all I see is an unfortunate victim of a lifetime of believing what his TV has told him. You're living proof of how invasive and ruinous the media is.
That's what I get, and just my gut feeling but he seems to have reached an inflection point where he has hit a gross-out boundary on the Right and is pulling back a little to fine tune his rants a little better. This years shows so far he has been a really good moderator.
maher revels in this counter culture nonsense where he believes it's still 1967 and he's "sticking it to the man"
he won't ever accept that liberalism is statism and anti-freedom. i mean once in a while he actually gets it right, but he'll never turn on liberalism, because he desperately wants it be some counter culture, cool ideology... in his mind "san francisco" by scott mckenzie is on a loop.
maher reminds me of someone i once knew who was still living in the 60s, she was like karen from the wonder years but in 2015.
an embarrassing old dinosaur who lives for his clapping seal audience who are even more clueless than he is.
He said he has Libertarian leanings, but that when he looks at the Libertarian party he is repelled by its fascist leanings. Those are my words and just the impression that I got, based on actual fucking words.
I am thinking about the rest of your comment will hang back on comment.
