"Candle in the Wind" is perhaps the most hypocritical ...

pretentious, and opportunistic ploy for gain ever written.

Yes, originally it was a great paean to Marilyn Monroe and it could have remained as that, forever.

But to rework it to capitalize on Princess Diana's death? Monstrous.

Seriously, were Marilyn Monroe and Princess Di anything alike?

What a shallow self-serving old queer. And the world applauds him and never questioned his contorted remake.

🙄

Some people like money. And lots of it.

Elton John was asked to perform at Princess Diana’s funeral. Bernie Taupin rewrote the lyrics of Candle In The Wind to suit her. After the funeral, Elton John recorded it and all of the proceeds went to charities that Princess Diana supported.

reply

Write a new song. It's a testament that his talent was burned out at that point and he should have stayed the fuck out of it.

The career rejuvenation and the publicity was probably worth more than the proceeds.

Now Marilyn Monroe's ghost will forever haunt him for stealing her song.

reply

One of the worst songs in pop music history.

This. And yet the media lapped it up.

It was cynical ploy to earn money by exploiting a tragedy.

I cringe every time I hear either version now.

reply

“It was cynical ploy to earn money by exploiting a tragedy”

To be fair, it went to charity (mostly the AIDS Foundation) not his own pocket, so it gets a pass from me.

reply

Okay, my bad. So he didn't directly profit from record sales. That changes nothing about his cynical ploy though.

It revived his career and put him in the limelight again. He profited nonetheless.

reply

I didn’t like the song myself, however, he was good mates with Lady Di and the impression I got was that he was genuinely grieving over the loss of a friend.

reply

Still a bad move though. Create a new song! I googled around and the remake is described as "tacky", which it was.

reply

I never liked it.

reply

It definitely turns me off whenever I hear it. And the context others are citing here requires a google search most of the listeners don’t have when the song is playing. So, I’ve naturally came to a conclusion similar to yours when I heard it.

reply

Nobody's forcing you to hear it. Have you ever written anything worthwhile in any of your 11,000+ posts?
There's a whole world outside your door, take a break once in a while.

"tacky"

What?!

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

[Chorus]
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will

What's not to like? Hooray!

reply

It would be a great ode if it was an original. But it's a remake of another lady's song.

reply

Nope. "Nakita" is the most hypocritical.

To know this is an old queer pining for unrequited love for a female is simply hypocritical...and dumb.

reply

Lol. Fortunately I've never heard that one. Yeah, I am not an Elton John fan.

reply

the song sucks. period

reply

I like a lot of Elton’s music but yeah, this one is not very good.

It’s a bit of a depressing slog in either version.

reply

I always liked "The Bitch is Back" best

reply

lol

And that was before Elton came out of the closet!

reply

Agreed, I never understood why he chose to maul that song and not make the effort to come up with something new for Diana, to me it seemed disrespectful to both ladies.

Lazy old queen. Lol.
