You actually beat me to this post. I like Kevin Smith and being a little older than him I finally need to ask what's up with the baggy shorts, oversized hockey jersey and that backwards ballcap? I know when he weighed alot he might have been self conscious about his rotund appearance but he actually lost alot of weight and looks better so their is no excuse for a man who is nearly fifty to dress like a twelve year old.
I think it's because he's mentioned that every time he loses weight, he balloons back up.
At this point, it's pretty much his uniform. Kinda like how Andrew Dice Clay still wears the black jeans and leather jacket. Or Steven Tyler wears the spandex and scarfs.
It's his signature look.
Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.
Or it could just be that he grew up in the 80's and keeps that look because he's comfortable with it?
I'm just saying, whereas nowadays there are lots more options, even just 5 years ago being considerably larger meant your choice in clothing was limited - trust me, I rocked the tshirt, boots, shorts and army coat or sweatshirt (I grew up in the 90's) for years when I was at my heaviest - it's comfortable and actually thinning because it doesn't give away how large you are if you already wear oversized things.
But we can all agree Kevin Smith has never done Hollywood the traditional way - whether you're a fan or not - so why would he conform to the stylish grown-up ideal?
Even tho tons of people dislike him as a writer of director he's living a good life, married to a gorgeous woman w/ an adorable kid and gets paid to hangout with his friends and being paid for it and doing what he loves...that's a whole HELL of a lot more than most people can say, and ultimately what most people strive to find - so if he's gotten this far doing it the way he does it, what reason is there to change?
Or it could just be that he grew up in the 80's and keeps that look because he's comfortable with it?
True, plus it's a good look for him and fits his style, so why change to please someone else? He doesn't need to "dress for success" because he's already successful.

K.Smith doesn't have much of an image. Fat balding guy with a beard. Without the signature cap and jersey he has no identity. He could have gone all hardcore and shaved his head and gotten tattoos, but this is certainly much more comfortable. His business is being himself. He's his own brand, Silent Bob. People who aren't obsessed with him see the look and go, Oh, I know that guy, from that thing.
