Why is Greer Garson completely forgotten now?

In the '40s, she was MGM's leading lady and got all the top dramatic parts. With five consecutive Oscar nominations, she was considered the greatest actress second only to Bette Davis, a feat only Bette matched. Even Katharine Hepburn didn't have her reputation then of being the greatest (or second greatest) actress of all time.

Yet, Greer Garson is completely forgotten these days. People remember Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, and Barbara Stanwyck, but absolutely nobody remembers Greer Garson or any of her movies. The only movie that's somewhat still known is Mrs. Miniver and even that isn't quite the classic it used to be. Does anybody know why there's been such a cultural abandoning of Greer Garson?

I am sadly lacking in my movie knowledge pre 1950, only seeing some of the classics.

I do highly recommend Madame Curie (43). Which is the only movie I've seen her in.

Tenacity and work ethic!

Times change, styles change and being forgotten is the fate of most stars (indeed nearly all actors, writers, musicians, etc). I remember her but it's a very long time since I watched Mrs Miniver or Goodbye Mr Chips.

Among people who care about pre-1960s movies, Greer Garson is not forgotten. She is still a star.

If you look up her film pages here on Moviechat you will find plenty of discussions carried over from the old IMDb days.

She was a huge star in her day but many of her ‘noble lady’ roles have not aged all that well. Unlike Davis, Stanwyck, Crawford, Hepburn etc who, I would argue, had greater range and were not afraid to play dirty. Garson was a good actress but she’s never been one who jumps off the screen for me - she is missing a certain star quality, although clearly back in her heyday she must have had it in spades.

She isn't forgotten, there are still film fans who have seen "Mrs. Miniver" and her "Pride and Prejudice".

And they don't like her.
