shareShe was a Communist!!!
Just kidding. I mean she was politically active and a leftist in the 1950's. She was targeted by Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities.
Brave woman ahead of her time.
She had to flee the U.S. for France just to escape Jim Crow and racism.
That is the sad part, to shine, she had to go to Europe. By 16, she was married 2X. I know people married younger then, but still a little messed up.
shareShe aided the French Resistance during World War II and was awarded the Resistance Medal by the French Committee of National Liberation, the Croix de Guerre by the French military, and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.
It is said that Josephine Baker was refused service at the Stork Club in NYC. Grace Kelly was there. Grace Kelly, furious, arm in arm with Baker stormed out. Grace Kelly never returned to this restaurant and she became lifelong friends with Baker. It is because of this friendship, Josephine Baker is buried in Monaco.
I never knew Grace Kelly was at the restaurant.
shareIt seems she would take off much more of her clothing than most books like to admit.
shareIn New York she made a decent living, in France she made enough to buy the Château et jardins des Milandes!

$125 a week wasn't buying that kind of house in the US, on the off chance that anyone had been willing to sell her a fine house in the country. Which would have been illegal or unthinkable, in much of early 20th century America.
