I know this is a movie site, but no. He was known as a football player first. The fact he did some movies, is just a footnote.

Yes...if you're an American (like I am and you are, I assume). I remember hearing that he was actually referred as "The Naked Gun actor") overseas, because they didn't know his American Football background like we did! But he was such a great running back and later became well-known as an announcer for NBC.
