Campbell Scott: Why Didn't It Ever Really Happen For Him?

He did happen--but not really. He's 58 now and does some TV, voiceover work, and once in a blue moon, some theatre. (He's playing Scrooge in some NYC production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL right now.)

But back in the early 90s, he was as good looking, talented, and promising as the best of his peers, the heir to an acting dynasty (George C Scott and Colleen Dewhurst). He starred in big projects for a short while: THE SHELTERING SKY, LONGTIME COMPANION, DEAD AGAIN, DYING YOUNG, & SINGLES. He was memorable as Jennifer Jason Leigh's object of affection in MRS. PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE. Then, suddenly, a much lower profile with a long run of indie movies until washing up in TV guest appearances.

Did he not want stardom enough? Why has he stayed in the business this long? Would his legendary parents be disappointed if they were alive to follow his career?

He's a fine actor -- I particularly loved him in Longtime Companion and Roger Dodger. While he still appears in films from time to time, I think he is first and foremost a stage actor - I read that he is playing Mr Scrooge (a role which was of course famously portrayed by his father) on Broadway this Christmas.

Because he is, by his own admission, A very dull actor.

Not entirely true, he pointed out that there’s a group of people who find him dull but he didn’t admit he’s a very dull actor himself.

There are bigger stars than Campbell who I find duller than him, myself. Perhaps his career never really hit the heights, but not everyone can be Tom Cruise. I’ve enjoyed most of his performances I’ve seen.
