I've followed her career since the 60s and I'm sure she has only married once, to Sam Elliott. However, she had a few high-profile relationships before their hookup, including a famous author whose names eludes me (maybe Tom Wolfe?).

Yes, I seem to remember her being involved with a VIP, but for the life of me I cannot remember who it was. There was a lot of talk and a big scandal about it at the time.

The name you want is Conrad Hall, the award winning cinemetographer. I'm reading Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking and saw them mentioned as a couple in the early seventies.

I've heard she has been married five times. It surprised me to read where she and Sam didn't meet while filming BUTCH CASSIDY. I thought they fell in love around that time, but evidently not. She may have been married a few times in the years that followed until she and Sam finally did meet.

I love Katharine as an actress. She and Sam make a great couple. One of her best screen moments was when she tells Sundance her reasons for going with him: 26 and a school teacher. That could have been a throwaway line, but she gave it resonance.

Another great scene of hers is the finale of THE GRADUATE. The look on her face is priceless. She and Dustin nailed ambivalence.

The way movies are filmed Sam and Katherine probably were not on location together. The DVD commentary says the scenes in a particular location were filmed fairly much in sequence but since his scenes had nothing to do with hers and it was really early in his career they probably weren't ever in the same place at the same time.

Yes, the same IMDB that states Sylvester Stallone is 5'10", and well, I can go on and on but I won't.


I am guessing some of Katharine's prior "marriages" were actually pre-80s, "live-in" romances, or relationships, and that a marriage license was not obtained for all 4 past "marriages". It has not always been acceptable to "shack up" or to co-habit, thus, "we're married", could have been a more acceptable answer, socially. I could be wrong.

Has anyone ever bothered to Interview Katharine and simply ask her about her "marriages", which took place before Sam? Does anyone know if there has been an interview of such?


My point is, I am not sure the information on her "marriages" is based on reliable sources; I'd really like to know more about these "sources". And if these sources (some can be found as referenced links on a Katharine Ross Wikipedia Article.), do prove credible, so what, she has been married 5 times. That simply means she made some hasty decisions, and possibly is an incurable romantic.
