There was a time you could use it in kind of a referential way without getting into trouble.

Like when answering a question along the lines of, "What does N.W.A. stand for? The rap group, I mean?"

There's actually a video of politicians like Biden using THE WORD while quoting other people. Of course, wrong, very wrong.
