Always thought the Abyss was great, so what happened to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio

Always thought the Abyss was great, so what happened to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio? Maybe all that pounding on her chest gave her a heart condition? ;-) Seriously, MEM was a good actress and nice looking ... what happened?

Abyss is great. I haven't seen her in much else and now just saw her in the Punisher. It's sort of weird cause I've only seen her when she was young and now suddenly saw her 30 years later.. It was almost like she was wearing make up to make her look older.

These days one starts to get the impression that a lot of people, women especially, drop out of the entertainment industry or settle for low-key roles because the price to pay in harassment is too high. I just wonder if that is a factor in the careers of some actresses we see that are very good, but who do not work a lot.

You've been coming into contact with too much propaganda from the #MeToo fanatics.

People always ask this about female actors as if it's a great mystery. There are so many fewer roles for women than men in big movies that's they'd even a challenge to identify movies with two female characters, with names, who talk to each other for at least 10 sec about something other than the men in the movie. It is quite a challenge.

If women are lucky they get cast as moms while still pretty young. Only a handful get regular work throughout their lives.

I remember MEM in The Perfect Storm as the skipper of the other boat. Not alot else comes to mind. I always thought she was (and is) one of the most beautiful women in the world as well as a good actor.

I liked her, especially in the Abyss, but I would not go so far as to say that she was one of the most beautiful women in the world, unless you just count any women who is attractive enough to chosen to be a movie actress as in that category. She is a great actress and very attractive, and I agree with you on the sexist roles in Hollywood. One just has to look closely at that and one sees the sexism rampant in our society, and yet the whole male v. female thing is a complicated issue to because the two genders are for the most part not equal, but everyone is human and deserves rights, respect and consideration.

She was in a nice movie called Limbo with David Straithairn and Kris Kristofferson.

reply

I forgot she was in Limbo - saw that so long ago. Lol, that ending really pissed-off a lot of people!

reply

Yeah, I try not to think about that. I enjoyed the experience of watching the film, and I don't get why people get so hung up on having preconceived notions of what they expect and need to have that fulfilled.

reply

She still acts, what do you mean what happened? It does appear she stopped making movies though and is almost exclusively a TV actress now.

reply

It's quite a gappy record though. Every couple of years she's popped up in a series then wandered off to do her own thing - which appears to include stage work.

Super underrated actress. Remember seeing her for the first time in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and of course Abyss and Scarface. Also she really holds her own in a Gene Hackman movie called Class Action. Sucks that roles seem to dry up for most older actresses.

reply

She made 28 films and shows after Abyss.
