What was the general consensus of it at the time? Did people actually buy it?

I never heard of her until two months ago (ca. May-June 2023). I like her music. Other than that, I know nothing about her, and don't care. That stuff is her business.

I remember a lot of people calling BS on it and it seems her song “Celebrity Skin” pretty much verified it was just an act.
