Persis Kambatta died in 1998 ??? Had no idea.

From IMDB:

In the early 1980s, Khambatta was seriously injured in a car crash in Germany and had to have heart bypass surgery.

A year before her death, she wrote and published a coffee table book called "Pride of India" which featured former Miss Indias; it was dedicated to Mother Teresa and part of the royalties went to the Missionaries of Charity. On August 17, 1998, Persis Khambatta was taken to the Marine Hospital in South Mumbai, complaining of chest pains. She died of a heart attack on August 18, 1998 at age 49, her funeral was held in Mumbai.

The Star Trek movie was not so hot, but it always seems a shame when someone with so much potential and so young dies.

Damn, this lady had some tough breaks in her life.

reply

Wow, I didn't know either.

Well, I suppose to honor her.....

An Uncle of mine worked in Hollywood for over 20 years.

He said Persis Khambatta was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen.

Quite a compliment because he'd seen them all.

I am a big fan of Star Trek, so I knew she had died way too young.

I remember reading how she was reluctant to have her head shaved for the role in STTMP. But she really looked beautiful without hair. Not very many women could pull off that look!

reply

Funny you say that - it was at that exact time my Uncle was referring to.

He said she was so beautiful he actually went up to her and told her. WHich I'm sure he'd never done before or since in his life.

And she was bald at the time.

reply

I would not go that far. She has the kind of beauty that is super plain, but very regular and pleasing to the eye. I think she looked better with her shaved head. It's a shame it did not help her career in movies, at least in the US market. All in all Star Trek the movie was not so great, as in my opinion all of the Star Trek movies were not good.

They were watchable, and very forgettable.

I always wonder why Star Trek did not transfer to the movie screen well. It could be they just waited too long, all the actors got old and fatner. But they also were not content with doing Star Trek style plots with good effects. They had to have a bigger Enterprise, then they had to destroy it in every movie.

Every movie now has to have a giant alien spaceship that hangs in the air over all the major cities of Earth. If you think about it, a spaceship that has to expend energy on the order of a star to be able to make relativistic jumps, if that is even possible, - why would it waste its energy hovering in the air?

The people who make Science fiction movies are idiots that do not understand Science Fiction.

reply

Her bypass surgery had nothing to do with the car crash. She was a chain smoker and had an eating disorder.

I didn't realize she was the female terrorist in Nighthawks.
