2 opposite reasons spring to mind:
1. he regrets his life, what he did, what he became
2. he experienced SO MUCH pleasure in his life, that there was literally nothing else worth living for. Now that he was too old really to perform, his reason for being was gone.
I'm leaning more on the second.
The sources even disagree on the way he committed suicide ... there is really no good information available.
If there is something to the way that his wife and colleagues describe him (as always successful and cheerful), then it was probably a freak reaction to substance abuse that induced him to kill himself.

As for Dough, I thought he hung himself.
Like most porn performers, he was sexually abused as a child. That's why he turned to porn and drugs and other self-destructive behavior. In the end, all he could do to put himself out of his misery was suicide. It's really sad.
