I hate winston!!

when i was growing up in the 80's, everybody in my school hated WINSTON, why? because for many of us this goof almost ruined the movie ghostbusters.
why was he even in it? his character is totaly pointless and the movie would of been better off without him.

any idea why he was not only in ghostbusters but ghostbusters 2?
