She was great in The Shining (1980).

Duvall died in her sleep of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas, Dan Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Gilroy said.

I remember her when she was really cute. It was a shock to see her in later years.

Well, this is terrible news.
75 seems a tad young. She was a girl next door beauty and a wonderful actress and widely reported to be a fine person.

It seems that mental illness and diabetes were the main culprits. This is a very sad day.

The horrible time Kubrick gave her on the set of The Shining won't have helped either. Bound to have knocked a few years off of her lifespan.

reply

Kubrick did have a reputation as a tyrant on set. This is well known.

He could have used a good slap session.

I was a kid when that film came out, what did he do to traumatize her? I read Jack came to her defense on the set. I want to see Popeye.

reply

He was one of those sorts that needed his performers to do dozens of takes of the same scene. Scenes you would likely not remember.
Likely scenes his actors nailed on the first take.

As a director I respect him but it seems he was an asshole.

There is a tactful way to treat people.

reply

RIP. She made for a great Olive Oyl.

Sad to see this...I saw "Popeye" in the theater when I was a kid. Both Shelley Duvall and Robin Williams are gone now. 😥

And, yes, she was great in "The Shining" (which I didn't see until years after it ran in the theaters).

RIP, Shelley Duvall.
