What happened to her?

Faye Dunaway was a huge star after Bonnie and Clyde. In the 1970s, she starred some real classics like Network, Chinatown, The three days of Condor and The Towering Inferno. She won an Oscar for her role in Network. What happened to her? In the 1980s, you see her in awful films like Supergirl.

What happened to Faye Dunaway in two words: MOMMIE DEAREST

In every artist, there is an eternal battle for the soul, and the combatants are the talent and the ego. In order for the talent to shine its brightest, and the artist's career to flourish, the ego must be kept ruthlessly in check... but in the everlasting battle with the talent, it has the advantage of always being able to tell the artist what they want to hear.

In Dunaway's case, the ego won a permanent victory sometime around 1980.

She was very good in Barfly (1987)

reply

She got old and retired.

Her movie Barfly tanked and she was widely criticized for it. That was probably the event.

reply

No, Mommie Dearest was the movie that wrecked her career. and made her a complete laughingstock in Hollywood. Barfly was the movie that was supposed to redeem her but the film didn't gain anyone's interest or generate any buzz so very few people saw her performance in it or cared enough about it. Ironically, in spite of all that, she is still best fondly remembered for Bonnie and Clyde and Network, so even though she stopped working pretty much her legacy is intact.
