I was embarrassed for Stephen Dorff appearing in Immortals.

reply

He's not wrong

reply

you are not a superhero movie fan?

reply

Not in abundance. I mean I'm not a huge Stephen Dorff fan either...but yeah. Way, way too many superhero movies.

reply

i know successful businessmen in their 60s who just can't wait for the latest superhero movie. i find it funny.

reply

I admit that I liked a couple of them, but they just aren't for me.

reply

Right message from the wrong actor.

reply

why?

reply

I WATCHED THIS JACKASS IN 2017'S LEATHERFACE LAST NIGHT...ADD THAT TO THE 4 DOZEN DEEP STACK OF EMBARRASSING FLICKS HE HAS MADE.

reply

you are not a fan?

reply

I LIKE HIM...HE MAKES A LOT OF EMBARRASSING MOVIES THOUGH.

reply

Oh c'mon, the guy was pretty solid in Deuces Wild 19 years ago!

reply

HIS BEST FILM IS STILL 1987'S THE GATE...WHEN HE WAS A CHILD.

reply

I think he's just miffed because that Renner fellow landed the role of Hawkeye in the MCU and is probably doing a Scrooge McDuck dive into a swimming pool full of money right now

reply

He was actually in a very interesting film a few years ago called Wheeler. It's a faux documentary about a country star who wants to make it big in Nashville.

That may sound rote but it was a surprisingly interesting movie.

reply

I looked it up
Surprised he wrote and sang some of the songs

Thanks, I'll give it a look if I can find it

reply

I didn't even realize that. Thanks for the info. I just read a review and this also caught my eye:

"Shot under Borat-like conditions in which Stephen Dorff (wearing enough prosthetics to keep from being recognized) sold himself to Nashville residents as an unknown singer-songwriter."

I have no idea if the film will be your cup of tea but I enjoyed it. If you do check it out, let me know.

reply

Copy that👍

reply

It's generally available

While agree with his sentiment, I don't think his opinion moves the needle one bit.

Scorsese wrote a more compelling OP-Ed on this very topic and was criticized for being "out of touch". I wish he shot back with more content but he just merely stood his ground on his opinion. The truth is that Superhero movies are an economic juggernaut and studios aren't going to fund lesser known projects and take any risks after a year of low profits from the pandemic.

WE LIKE THEM...THEY ARE USUALLY GOOD MOVIES.

Who is we? Teenagers?

reply

TEENAGERS CAN BE 39?

I saw him trending on Twitter when I got up today. I was excited at first, as I thought perhaps he had an interesting new movie out. Turns out, though, it was just hundreds of people who'd never heard of him before bashing his filmography in response to these comments.

Granted, he has done some crumby movies. But hypocrisy doesn't negate a valid point. And, to be fair, Scarlett Johansson probably has plenty more offers to choose from than Dorff does. Yet she still chooses these comic book movies (reminds me a bit of how Depp flipped from so many small, creative movies, to starring in a Disney franchise at a time when he could've done anything he wanted).

And, regardless of him being in a long line of clunkers, he's at least picked odd and interesting clunkers (for the most part) as opposed to just hopping into well-paying sure-things. A superhero movie he was in, for instance, entitled American Hero, was a creative concept, regardless of what one may think of how it turned out (I liked it).

Admittedly, however, these clunkers could've been his only option for all I know. So perhaps he would've been in a box office juggernaut if he'd been given the chance (I sure wouldn't say no to multi-millions for a movie). It would be interesting to see if he's actually turned down anything really big due to artistic integrity.

In either case, it feels like a bit of an ad hominem for everyone to disregard what he's saying just to "hit back" at him. It's sort of like how on these message boards if you shit on a movie and someone responds with "What movies have you been in?", as if that's a valid response to our criticisms. But I suppose, in his position, that's to be expected from people. So he should've known better than to say anything. All it does is hurt him.
