Could she have become a noted director without nepotism?

Just wondering... She never went to film school and had minimal filmmaking experience before The Virgin Suicides -- which, of course, was produced by her father. Sigh.

Of course, you're assuming she became a director because of nepotism. It's a fair argument that she became an actress through nepotism, but she did quite a bit more with less than most directors do with more.

Promise me, no matter how hopeless things get, keep on trying, OK? Keep coming chin-up, OK?

This is an old issue with Sofia Coppola that resurfaces from time to time mostly because in her case nepotism was so conspicuous. Compare with Nic Cage who even changed his name and declined to use his family's wealth to ignite his career.

That doesn't even make sense, plus it's not true. Sofia is the poster girl for trust fund kids. She used dad's money and contacts from day one to branch off in a few directions (fashion design, TV, photo, acting) before using dad's Zoetrope company to become a director overnight.
She never became an actress, she just dabbled in it.

Nepotism cheapens everything, including the inhuman efforts of non-privileged novice filmmakers.

Produced, not directed or written. He paid for the film, basically.

I think her unique vision and subtly haunting films have spoken for themselves.

I'm absolutely sure there are 1000's of more gifted wannabe filmmakers out there whose "unique visions" will never be realized because their dads are not walking purses. THIS is what speaks for itself.

Nope, she would NEVER have made it without daddy.

who cares? the majority of people who get anywhere in Hollywood are there because they "knew somebody", it's all about connections and taking the opportunities that you have, when you have them. She could've simply wandered through life not doing very much because of her dad, but she chose to make movies and her dad helped - what's the big deal? If your dad had a lot of money and you wanted to make movies wouldn't you want him to help you out? and wouldn't you be sick of people only ever talking about "Daddy's money" instead of talking about your efforts as a filmmaker?
