The real reason why IMDB shutdown the messageboards.

Part of it had to do with Jonathan Brandis. Anyone remember why?

reply

No Ghostbusters 2016 is why those boards shut down.

reply

Yes, that film received a lot of hate on the message board!

reply

Because some obscure actor died of autoerotic asphyxiation 10 years before?

reply

Negative. A writer was dishing information on sexual abuse that led to the death of brandis.

reply

Brandis died in 2003, 14 years before IMDb closed its boards.

reply

Source?

reply

The original message boards. Maybe saved on archive.org or the way back machine. I do know that the writer also worked on one of the hundreds of gundam iterations. It's bothered me for years, the guy was dropping all kinds of dirt and then the boards got nuked. I think I have screen shots saved somewhere but that was eons ago. It's wild too with all the crap that came out afterwards about Harvey Weinstein, Bryan singer, Epstein, maxwell, mossad... Now we are seeing history repeat itself with Clive Davis, puff daddy, Obama... Something tells me the second half of 2024 and onward is going to be a hell of a ride.

reply

Nice. I'm going to start digging again. I was able to figure some things out years ago based on what that guy wrote, he was being super ambiguous but gave enough that people started connecting dots. Hopefully I find it.

reply

Source for what? That Brandis died of auroerotic asphyxiation? My own dirty mind. He was found hanging from the rafters of his apartment with his pants down around his ankles.

reply

well, because there are 2 drastically different reasons for why he died

reply

We may as well explore this. What are the two?

reply

Actually, their servers and website needed updating, which they chose not to spend the money on.

reply

Occam's razor for the win.

reply

👏

reply

Pretty much. The boards were determined to be more trouble than they were worth. Why invest money in them when they were kind of an ongoing headache anyway.

I don't think there was one particular incident or board that lead them to make that decision.

reply

👍

reply

But Ben claims he did it!

reply

🤣

reply

Only reason they gave — that I saw — was the boards “are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.”

No clue what that means.

I had a multitude of positive experiences venting about what absolute shits most films/shows/actors were as well as my growing distain for the idiots posting on IMDb and their ridiculous opinions.

reply

I think we were a very small percentage of total website visits.

reply

Some time before the shut down there was briefly a search function, but it was discontinued because of high server load. I don't remember the exact phrasing for the reason, but that was the idea. Roughly at the same time they were looking for more programmers, maybe to code more efficient message board.

So it's within reason to assume the new message board, database and servers for it would have been too expensive.

reply

Even with them running ads?

reply

I have no idea so I replaced "likely" in my post, but they were looking for Perl programmers which means their software was inefficient especially when serving 10s of millions of registered users so the server costs must have been high. I can accept that the boards cost more to run than they got from the ads and were willing to pay.

reply

Exactly.

reply

I could have sworn there was a banner which stated something like:

“The boards are being shut down due to trolls and hurtful behavior….”

Or some bullshit like that, and I remember thinking, you’re going to let
these fucking snowflakes win and take away our beloved boards because of people with low self esteem and an inability to separate themselves from their feelings.
In the words of Thom Yorke, “Just because you feel it, doesn’t mean it’s there.”

Yes the trolls pissed me off, but I just read around that BS and searched for the material that I was looking for, as I’m sure most of you did.

reply

It wasn't the trolls. That's always the excuse when they want to censor something... Hollywood is gross and a lot of it got covered on those boards.

reply

Women got on the boards and started talking about Weinstein and his behavior. Weinstein had the power to shut down the IMDB boards.

reply

What do you people think of Moviechat being a ghost town in comparison to back when IMDB message boards existed?
IMDB message boards had both real movie fanatics and casual movie watchers. Movie fanatics stuck with IMDB and casual watchers do not even know this website exists.

reply

I just found out today, brandis crazyniess from 7 years ago was the first thing that popped in my mind, its the only reason why I am here.

reply

No it was the CP being advertised on the board and it was impossible for the mods there to monitor it.

reply

Nope it was a desperate attempt to prevent Kowalski polluting the internet with her woke garbage. They pulled the plug on the whole thing like humanity reacted when Cybernet achieved sentience in Terminator. Pure terror.
