Why is SHE the only one dogged by 'Showgirls'?

There's a an entire cast of well known actors/actresses in this movie but whenever Elizabeth Berkeley is shown on tv or talked about by media commentators they always reference her to "Showgirls".

Even Gina Gershon has been able to detach herself from the film and she's not lambasted for being involved with it.

Several reason I think.
1)Prior to "Showgirls" Elizabeth was the nice clean cut teenager character. The transition from Jessie to Nomi was so great it shock many people. Shock like this tend to be remembered.
2) Elizabeth of the cast was just about the only one to promote the film. She appeared on all the talk shows (Letterman, O'Brien, etc) and traveled all over the world to promote it. She even promoted it when she appeared at premieres of other films. So her name was further associated with "Showgirls."
3) The remaining cast headed for the hills when the film was released. So they tended to be forgotten.
4) Each of the others already had established film careers of sorts. Elizabeth was new so she received the blame.
5) Elizabeth was prominant in the film-in virtually every scene. She was the star.

You make valid points and yes I do recall her being the "star", as well as the most covered representative during the press junkets. That being said, all actors have starred in crap movies...even the best of them.

It just seems unfair, as well as weird, that she's the target of ridicule whenever this movie is referenced. Even on VH-1's various vintage nostalgia shows Berkeley is constantly attached to this stinker.

I agree. It is unfair. Sowgirls wasn't really that bad of a film. Elizabeth is a telented actress and could go far in the industry. I think one thing that really upset me was that out of the entire cast and production crew, the only one to support her and try to deflect some of blame was Esterhouse (sp?).

It's unfair Elizabeth got the blame. But now it's all for the best because Showgirls has become a cult success and because Elizabeth was scapegoated for the failure, the cult fans love her as they see her as the reason for it's cult status. Notice when Elizabeth is mentioned in the media, they mention her as "Showgirls star" as if it's a good thing.

Yes but Elizabeth has done much finer work than "Showgirls". "Roger Dodger" for example. It is a shame that she is remembered for "Showgirls" and not her better work.
