He made great movies and I remembered his name even as a kid but I never bothered to look him up. I agree with posters before, he doesnt have a unique style, he just makes good movies. He is what a milktoast tv show director would be if the director was really good and knew all the tricks of the trade. The ultimate evolution of a feel good director.

He hasn't made a good film in two decades! (Cast Away). As they say in Hollywood, you're as good as your last hit.

He's the best example of what it means to be a workman director - the films that he makes are famous but most people wouldn't know his name unless they were film buffs.
