Wasn't considered hot enough for Officer and a Gentleman
Apparently the producer thought she wasn't "fuckable" enough for the role. I thought she looked pretty good and probably more in keeping with a small town and her working class status.

That is preposterous.
She is hot enough and simple enough to fit the Cinderella type regular women will identify with.
You get instead Cindy Crawford and you alienate your main audience.
That is the interesting thing. A seriously hot chick (or traditionally hot whatever term you like) wouldn't have worked in this role. DW's character is a working class girl next door type. She fits the role perfectly.
A Cindy Crawford alienates women as you say but also has the audience wondering why she hasn't been snapped up already.
Precisely.
Even Winger was too hot, they made her more homely with the awful hats etc to that effect.
The pretty one for the movie to work is Mayo.
Gere was perfect, but so was Winger.
It's funny how she was actually more alluring than Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter) when she donned that Wonder Girl costume.
