What the Hell Happened to Debra Winger?

http://lebeauleblog.com/2013/02/02/what-the-hell-happened-to-debra-win ger/

Debra Winger has received three Academy Award nominations. She’s been nominated four times by the Golden Globes. Not to mention numerous nominations for various critics’ awards and a couple of wins. But despite the acclaim, she had a toxic reputation for being “difficult” – a reputation which she reinforced by trash-talking co-stars and directors.

After over a decade as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses, Winger walked away. Even among actresses where this sort of thing is common, Winger’s disappearance was perplexing. So much so that it was the inspiration for a documentary titled What the Hell Happened to Debra Winger?

No wait, that’s not right. It was actually called Searching for Debra Winger. but it might as well have been the original What the Hell Happened?

So, what the hell happened?

I heard she was a bitch behind the camera. Never got along well with the cast. Bit of a diva. And shes turned down a lot of good roles so she basically lost her chance and her fame star has dimmed.

Her appeal was that she starred in Urban Cowboy, An Officer & a Gentleman, and Terms in Endearment back to back (almost) which were all hugely successful in the pop culture zeitgeist. She was an original earthy, quirky, sexy but unconventional "star" who was perfect for the early eighties.

Then Mike's Murder, Legal Eagles, and Black Widow showed she could be dull in dull movies while simultaneously cultivating an extremely difficult reputation causing her to no longer be the sought out "star actress". Film makers and audiences moved on.

Tale as old as time....

Winger is not a pleasant person.
Years ago, when I was working in a fairly nice, and popular LA restaurant, she & hubby Timothy came in for an early dinner. I had the unfortunate experience of being her waitress, through most of their meal. She was about 8 months pregnant, and very large, and didn't appear to be at all pleased or happy. She was gratuitously difficult, as I gave her a pass for her repeated rudeness due to her perhaps being very uncomfortably pregnant. She sent food back, was disagreeable at every opportunity. At one point, I looked at Timothy and felt sorry for him because he CLEARLY was embarrassed by her behavior. After sending her main meal back to the kitchen, and re-serving it, hoping the sauce was to her liking, she still refused to eat her meal. At this point our Restaurant Hostess and Seasoned Manager offered to finish waiting on said Winger and Timothy. There weren't a lot of patrons coming into the restaurant at that time, and so Judy (Hostess & Manager) was able to endure Winger's abuse better than I.

As far as being difficult in Hollywood, I too have heard she's a real piece of work on the set, and with her colleagues. I also read, that back in the day when her career was starting to take off, she did in fact have a drug problem, with cocaine. Being a recovering addict is fine but not fine when you subject those around you and who have to work with you, to your active drug use, and erratic behavior.

Lastly, on a more positive note, her brother Mark used to live here (where I live) in Santa Clarita, and was involved in supporting local politics, through the Democrat party. Our paths crossed, more than once, and he is or was an exceptionally pleasant man.

Never got the hype. Not more beautiful or talented than the many in her age range. Like Val Kilmer, she nuked her own career through bullheaded behavior.

She was known for arriving on set, announcing she "wasn't feeling it", then leaving, and thus leaving her costars and the crew without a job for the day. People eventually stopped hiring her.

I think she is a big talent, but she definitely ruined her own career.

She had drug and mental health issues. She alienated a lot of big stars and directors so no one wanted to work with her. In hindsight I wonder if she was really talented or just on drugs.

He's not only selfish and egomaniacal but she's also genuinely nasty and vindictive. She frequently trash-talked her fellow performers or her directors. Mental health problems do not excuse you for being a mean person.

Firstly, she was notorious for not playing nice with others. She had a rep for being difficult on set – not the type to kiss ass or play the Hollywood game. Directors and co-stars often found her bluntness and fierce independence a bit too much to handle. She clashed famously with big names, and in an industry where your network is your net worth, this was a one-way ticket to the bad books.

Secondly, Winger wasn’t afraid to call out the industry's crap. She openly criticized the quality of roles available to women, rejecting the superficial, eye-candy parts. In an industry obsessed with glamour, Winger's refusal to conform to the stereotype wasn’t exactly career-friendly. Her disdain for the Hollywood machine was bold but came at a high cost.

Lastly, she decided to step back voluntarily. Winger took a self-imposed hiatus, focusing on her personal life and more fulfilling projects. By the time she returned, the industry had moved on, and her no-nonsense attitude had left its mark.

I don't like her and I don't think she's beautiful.
When I see her cast in a film, it's instantly ruined because she's puts off such a nasty vibe. To me, she comes off as unclean, selfish and rude.
During the filming of "Terms of Endearment" (1983), it got physical between her and Shirley MacLaine.

She didn't like not being the center of attention and hated not having the last word. When all her antics didn't work, she did the most ghastly thing she could think of. In between takes Shirley was sitting on the bed when Debra walked up to her, put her rear end in her face (pulled her pants down) bent over and preceded to pass gas right in Shirley's FACE!

Yeah, you could say she's "difficult" or tell it like it is...!

The documentary 'Searching For Debra Winger' was made by the award-winning actress and film-maker Adrienne Shelly. The New York-based actress was the stunningly beautiful star of Hal Hartley's classic indie movies 'The Unbelievable Truth' and 'Trust' and also the writer-director of 'Waitress', the film that launched Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion and Jeremy Sisto to stardom.

Considering that 'Waitress' was released way back in the Spring of 2007, people may be forgiven for asking the question 'What the Hell Happened to Adrienne Shelly?'

The answer is that she was raped and murdered by a stalker in the previous fall while the movie was still in the editing suite. The 'official' version is that she died in a bungled opportunistic robbery, but this was a plea-bargain that saw the killer - a 19-year old construction worker employed by her apartment building to carry out renovations - jailed for Manslaughter One rather than tried for Murder With Special Circumstances. The man didn't even know her name, or even that she was an actress. The tragic irony was that Adrienne was stalked as a woman rather than as a celebrity. The letter accepting 'Waitress' for the Sundance film festival arrived the day after her death.

For political reasons the story was - to all intents and purposes - hushed up by the media. There were many aspects of the case that were equally embarrassing to both the Puritanical Left of the Democratic Party and the Racist Right of the Republican Party. The story was a crap-bomb that could have exploded in everyone's face. As a result, Adrienne Shelly's death was barely reported outside of New York City, and even there it was largely 'tabloid fodder' rather than real news.

In short, there are worse fates than the one than befell Debra Winger...

Wow she made a lot of bad choices there. Although I doubt that Debra could have made those movies as popular as they were had she been in them.

You are quite correct, WeLoveLG, the director WAS Rosanna Arquette and not Adrienne Shelly. Mea Culpa.

Still, in my defence the two actresses were very similar in their appearance and back in the day one was frequently mistaken for the other. Incidentally, they were both close personal friends and could often be seen in each others company.

However, you are quite wrong to say that Adrienne has no connection to the film. Adrienne Shelly was one of the actresses interviewed by Rosanna at some length for her documentary.

I guess we should both get our eyes tested, huh?
